Koutoubia to Jemaa el-Fnaa: a short exterior walk

Use the Koutoubia minaret as an easy landmark for a short Marrakech outing. Pair the public gardens and exterior views with Jemaa el-Fnaa, leaving mosque interiors and long shopping loops outside the plan.

01

Begin with the minaret view

Start in the public area around Koutoubia Mosque. Look at the stone tower and its bands of ornament before moving towards the gardens. The mosque remains a place of worship; this route is about exterior views, not entry to the prayer hall or climbing the minaret. Give worshippers space and follow local signs.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Take a garden pause

The public gardens beside the mosque offer a change of pace from the square. Follow the paths and use the minaret as an orientation point while choosing how far to wander. A shaded seat can make this the whole outing if the heat is strong. Keep children close near roads and do not cross traffic simply to follow the shortest line on a phone map.

03

Continue towards Jemaa el-Fnaa

Use the marked crossings on the approach to Jemaa el-Fnaa, then stop at its edge to get your bearings before entering the busier centre. The square changes through the day. Choose a short look around or a longer evening visit according to your energy; neither requires you to book an excursion or commit to a meal at a particular stall.

04

Leave room to choose your own pace

Keep valuables in a secure bag and ask before taking close portraits. If someone offers a paid service or photograph, establish the price before accepting. A clear meeting point is helpful if travelling together. Save the name and address of your accommodation and agree a return route while you still have a good sense of direction.

05

Extend north only if you want a meal stop

If you want a longer walk into the souks, use Rahba Kedima as the next anchor and consider Café des Épices for a seated break overlooking that square. This is an optional extension, not an adjacent stop: allow time to navigate. In hot weather, finish the shorter Koutoubia-and-square walk with water and a rest instead.
