Ben Youssef and Rahba Kedima: a northern medina walk

Use Ben Youssef’s courtyard as the main visit, then slow down around Rahba Kedima for a meal and a look at the shops. This walk keeps the northern medina together without adding a distant garden or southern palace.

01

Find the medersa entrance

Save Ben Youssef Medersa before leaving your accommodation and follow the signed public approach. The medersa is a historic school open to visitors; the adjacent Ben Youssef Mosque is a different building. Check the medersa’s current visitor guidance and buy the appropriate admission rather than following a map pin to a worship entrance.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Look closely at the courtyard

Give the central courtyard time before moving on. Look for the contrast between geometric tilework, carved plaster and wood above it, and the way the pool organises the view. Follow the marked route to any rooms currently open; do not assume every upper space or doorway is part of the visit. Keep passageways clear while taking photographs.

03

Continue towards the spice square

Make Rahba Kedima your next clear anchor through the souk lanes. Allow for browsing and navigation instead of treating the route as a timed march. Ask before photographing a person or a stall at close range, and confirm prices before buying. Save purchases for after the monument if you would otherwise carry bulky bags through it.

04

Make lunch part of the route

At Café des Épices, the square-facing setting makes a useful transition from sightseeing to a seated break. The venue’s Moroccan breakfast lists amlou and breads, so it also works as an earlier stop if you reverse the outing. Read the current menu and ask about ingredients rather than assuming a named dish suits an allergy.

05

Add a garden only if you want another paid stop

Le Jardin Secret on Rue Mouassine is a separate garden visit, with its own admission and optional tower arrangements. Check its official visitor information before detouring. For a shorter day, finish at Rahba Kedima and return by a familiar route; during summer heat, a break at your accommodation can be more useful than another exposed walk.

For a longer guided medina outing, Compare the Ben Youssef, Secret Garden and medina tour. This walk combines Ben Youssef Madrasa, the Secret Garden and souks, replacing the independent morning rather than supplementing it. Monument entry tickets are extra despite the queue assistance. Check English or French departures and your meeting point; riad pickup is limited to the private option within the medina.
