Chania’s old town: Splantzia and a Halepa museum alternative

Connect the harbour’s monuments with the lanes around Splantzia, then decide whether to stay on foot or make a separate museum journey to Halepa. The archaeology collection’s current address matters when planning the day.

01

Start with a visible historical layer

Begin at the Yali Mosque exterior on the harbour, then leave the waterfront for the old-town lanes. Look at the change from broad sea views to closely packed buildings and small corners. Choose a clear route anchor rather than walking every alley twice; a neighbourhood walk is useful even without buying entrance tickets at every monument.

02

Use Splantzia as the inland pause

Continue to Splantzia and Agios Nikolaos. Look at the church’s unusual combination of bell tower and minaret from the public square. Check worship and visitor arrangements before entering. The square is a good place to shorten the walk if your group wants less time on old paving.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

03

Know where the archaeology museum moved

The Archaeological Museum of Chania is at Skra 15 in Halepa. Choose it for a focused look at the area’s ancient history, and arrange a separate walk, bus or taxi journey according to your needs. Do not send readers to the former old-town museum address or describe Halepa as the next door along the harbour.

04

Check the day before travelling to Halepa

At our 9 October 2026 review, the museum published Tuesday closure. Packtricia will recheck visitor access; always confirm the current timetable before going. On Tuesday, keep the Splantzia and harbour route or choose the Maritime Museum if it is open. Do not replace one closed interior with another unverified ticketed stop.

05

Add a real breakfast stop if the order suits

If starting early, Bougatsa Iordanis on Apokoronou 24 gives the inland outing a specific food stop. Its cheese bougatsa is the reason to come, rather than a generic instruction to find a café after a monument. Confirm service and dietary needs, then continue towards the old town. If you already booked a tasting tour, avoid scheduling another large breakfast immediately before it.

Chania’s harbour buildings at dusk

A first weekend in Chania: harbour, old-town food and one museum

Give Saturday to the harbour and old town, then choose a museum for Sunday. Keep the closed market and ongoing paving repairs visible in the plan without letting either become a required stop.

Colourful buildings and restaurant terraces along Chania’s harbour

Chania’s maritime history: Firka and the separate Moro ship display

Choose between a broad maritime collection near Firka and the reconstructed Minoan ship at the Moro dockyard. They sit at different parts of the harbour, so give each its own access and ticket check.

Waterfront terraces and historic buildings in Chania

Chania’s market area: closed hall, cheese bougatsa and old-town food

Keep the historic market on your list, with its closure clearly stated. For an outing you can plan now, start with a named bougatsa stop and continue through available old-town shops.

Chania’s harbour breakwater and lighthouse seen across the water

Chania’s Venetian harbour: a waterfront loop and lighthouse choice

Use the harbour’s changing viewpoints, then decide whether the breakwater walk suits the day. The lighthouse is a view to work towards, not a promise of interior access or an all-weather pier outing.

Venetian bastions and the cityscape of Heraklion

A first weekend in Heraklion

Give Minoan history one day and Heraklion’s own streets another. Knossos, a city museum and the harbour make a workable weekend when you leave time for transport, meals and a weather alternative.

Rhodes harbour and medieval sea walls

A first weekend in Rhodes Town

Keep this weekend in Rhodes Town: one medieval interior, time for the Jewish Quarter, and a harbour walk. Lindos and distant beaches deserve their own transport plan rather than being squeezed into the city route.
