Chania’s market area: closed hall, cheese bougatsa and old-town food

Keep the historic market on your list, with its closure clearly stated. For an outing you can plan now, start with a named bougatsa stop and continue through available old-town shops.

01

Begin with the food the stop is known for

We recommend Bougatsa Iordanis at Apokoronou 24 for cheese bougatsa. The cheese filling and a sweet finish make this a specific Chania breakfast idea, rather than an interchangeable pastry-and-coffee stop. Ask about portion size, ingredients and service that day; this is not a suitable recommendation for every dairy or gluten restriction.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Keep the municipal market worth returning for

The historic Municipal Market was closed on 9 October 2026. The municipality’s 25 September announcement plans reopening and inauguration for 4 December 2026, without confirming every stall’s service. Packtricia will check for reopening; always check the venue before travelling. For now, use Iordanis and available old-town shops rather than making the hall a required stop.

03

Use available old-town shops instead

Continue towards the old town and browse shops offering Cretan ingredients such as olive oil, cheese or herbs. Ask where a product is made and read its label before buying; being sold in Chania does not prove local origin. Choose a small purchase you can carry through the rest of the outing, and check cabin-baggage limits before taking liquids home.

04

Give a food tour its own block of time

A hosted old-town food walk can replace the self-guided shop browse, but a four-hour tour needs a proper place in the day. Do not put it between two timed museum visits or assume it enters the closed market hall. Check the selected language, group type and actual meeting location; the operator’s named meeting point is more useful than a general market-area description.

For a hosted version, consider the Old Town walking tour with Cretan street-food tastings. The four-hour listing includes a guide, savoury tastings and coffee or herbal tea. Confirm language, shared or private option and dietary needs before booking; the listing excludes wheelchair users, people with mobility impairments and gluten intolerance. Use the meeting point in your booking, not the closed municipal market. Transfers and tips are separate.

05

Finish with the available harbour route

Walk towards the Venetian harbour for a change of setting after the inland food stops. Follow any paving-repair barriers and keep the lighthouse approach optional in wind. If rain continues, shorten the waterfront and choose an available museum. The market reopening deserves a future visit, but it should not determine whether today’s Chania outing works.

Chania’s maritime history: Firka and the separate Moro ship display

A first weekend in Heraklion

Give Minoan history one day and Heraklion’s own streets another. Knossos, a city museum and the harbour make a workable weekend when you leave time for transport, meals and a weather alternative.

A first weekend in Rhodes Town

Keep this weekend in Rhodes Town: one medieval interior, time for the Jewish Quarter, and a harbour walk. Lindos and distant beaches deserve their own transport plan rather than being squeezed into the city route.
