Prague Castle: main circuit, tower and October access choices

Choose the Castle interiors you want before adding a tower climb. Understand the main circuit, separate admissions, seasonal gardens and verified October restrictions before booking.

01

Choose a circuit for interiors, not just the skyline

Prague Castle is a group of buildings, courtyards and gardens, rather than a single room behind one door. If your priority is the skyline and Cathedral exterior, start with the available public areas and the official visitor map. If you want the interiors, the current main-circuit list names St Vitus Cathedral, Old Royal Palace, St George’s Basilica and Golden Lane. A walk outside does not replace that admission, and a circuit ticket does not include every separate exhibition.

For a guided or bookable alternative, consider this Prague Castle entry ticket for the self-guided circuit. It does not include a live guide or the separate Great South Tower. Bypassing the ticket-purchase queue does not remove security or building queues; check the dated closures and selected ticket scope.

02

Use the buildings to make a sensible sequence

At St Vitus, look for the Gothic structure and stained glass rather than hurrying immediately to a viewpoint. The Old Royal Palace offers Vladislav Hall’s great vaulted space; Golden Lane contrasts it with small houses and exhibits. St George’s Basilica provides another architectural contrast within the circuit. Follow the live map and available entrances, leaving time between buildings instead of reserving another attraction across town immediately afterwards. Religious services can limit sightseeing access to the Cathedral.

03

Keep the Great South Tower as a separate decision

The Great South Tower has its own admission. Choose it for a climb and elevated views, not because the main circuit automatically requires it. A visitor who dislikes stairs can still have a substantial Castle outing in the available buildings and courtyards. Check the tower’s current access conditions before paying, and decide after the main visit whether another climb would improve the day. Guides and audioguides are also separate choices; match any booking to the actual experience you want.

04

Plan around the checked October notices

Reviewed 13 October 2026: the Old Royal Palace will be closed 23–29 October for technical and state-ceremonial reasons. On 28 October the entire Castle area, gardens and visitor facilities close from 15:00; ticket sales stop at 14:00 and last visitor-facility entry is 14:30. The Royal Gardens and Stag Moat are closed throughout that day. St Vitus opens 12:00–17:00 on 16 October and 13:00–17:00 on 17 October, with last entry at 16:40 on both dates.

These notices make the palace and late Castle visits unsuitable as required stops on affected dates. Choose Old Town’s square and an available Town Hall tour instead, or give Kampa’s outdoor route its own afternoon. Packtricia will check for reopening and calendar changes, but readers should always check the venue before travelling. The listed closure end is not a separately confirmed reopening.

05

Winter gardens and a meal below the hill

The published seasonal calendar closes the Royal Garden, Stag Moat and South Gardens from November through February; do not use them as a winter connection between sights. Check the current map for an available route back to Lesser Town, or use PID transport when stairs and slopes are enough. Lokál U Bílé kuželky on Míšeňská is a separate meal stop below the hill: the checked menu offers goulash, schnitzel and fried cheese. Confirm service and reserve, allowing time for the descent rather than fitting lunch between tightly timed admissions.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

06

Take a small, practical sightseeing kit

Shoes with grip help on the approach and courtyard paving. Carry a weather layer for the outdoor links between interiors, modest clothes for religious spaces and a small bag that lets you handle tickets easily. Winter insulation should cover time spent standing, not only a brisk uphill walk. Keep the official closure page handy, then use Packtricia for a list based on your trip’s weather and chosen outings.

Check before you go
