Brno underground: market cellars or the St James Ossuary?

Choose between the Labyrinth’s market-cellar story and the St James Ossuary’s burial history. Understand separate locations, access questions and the unresolved Labyrinth closure notice.

01

Choose the subject before choosing the ticket

The Labyrinth under Zelný trh and the Ossuary beneath St James are different places with different stories. The Labyrinth introduces cellars associated with the market, storage and older city life. The Ossuary contains human remains and is a place of reverence, not simply another atmospheric cellar. Choose the subject that suits your party and leave the other visit optional. One substantial underground outing is often easier to combine with a meal than several back-to-back sessions.

02

For the Labyrinth, begin above ground on Zelný trh

Look at Parnas fountain and the surrounding square first, then relate the cellar visit to the market above it. TIC Brno describes displays about stored food and drink, older lighting and archaeological finds, along with interpretive reconstructions. Do not describe reconstructed scenes as untouched medieval rooms. The named entrance is at Zelný trh 21, separate from browsing stalls in the square. Confirm the session, tour language, steps and access limitations directly before committing to the route.

03

An unresolved closure notice needs an available alternative

Reviewed 14 October 2026: the tourism page still carries a technical closure notice for 15–18 September without a visible year or a clear reopening confirmation. That wording alone does not establish that the Labyrinth is either open or closed for your dates. Its linked underground operator page could not be inspected during this check. Keep the Labyrinth optional and confirm your actual session with TIC Brno. Packtricia will recheck the notice, but readers should always check the venue before travelling. The square and Old Town Hall exterior form a useful available outdoor alternative; an Ossuary visit requires its own confirmed admission.

04

Choose the Ossuary for burial history, respectfully

The St James Ossuary is at Jakubské náměstí, away from Zelný trh, and has a separate admission. Its interpretive setting includes music, but the central fact is that it is a burial place. Discuss the presence of human remains with anyone in your party who may find that distressing, keep voices low and follow the visitor rules. The published normal calendar closes on Mondays. Check the live session and holiday arrangements; do not make it the automatic Monday replacement for an unavailable Labyrinth.

05

Leave room for a central-street break

If you choose one underground venue, give the rest of the outing to the surrounding streets rather than rushing to the second entrance. SKØG on Dominikánské náměstí is a separate café and food option in the centre, with a checked brunch and later snack menu. A cheddar sandwich or the vegan focaccia option makes the break concrete; confirm availability and dietary needs for your visit. Keep the meal flexible when you cannot reserve a weekend table.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

06

Ask about access and take an extra layer

Do not assume an underground tour is step-free, suitable for a pushchair or comfortable for someone uneasy in enclosed spaces. Ask the operator about your specific requirements and any storage rules, then choose the squares or an accessible indoor alternative if necessary. A removable knit helps in cooler subterranean rooms without requiring a heavy outdoor coat throughout the visit. Take tested shoes and a small bag, and use the current city transport planner for your return.
