A first Prague weekend: Old Town, Kampa and Castle hill

Give the river and Old Town one day, then make Castle hill the focus of the next. This weekend plan leaves room for meals, one paid interior per outing and a museum alternative.

01

Day one morning: Old Town without a tower marathon

Start at Old Town Square and use the Town Hall’s clock and the Church of Our Lady before Týn’s twin spires to get your bearings. Look at the façades before choosing a paid Town Hall visit. Its tower and historical interiors offer a different experience from watching the outdoor clock; check the available tour language and entry arrangements. Leave other tower climbs for another outing so the morning has room for the square itself.

02

Day one lunch and afternoon: cross to Lesser Town

Follow Karlova towards Charles Bridge, then cross while leaving the middle of the walkway clear. Pause for the statues and the view back to Old Town’s bridge tower. For a sit-down Czech meal, consider Lokál U Bílé kuželky at Míšeňská 12, a practical stop on the Lesser Town side. Its checked evening menu includes beef goulash with dumplings and fried cheese; confirm the day’s offering and dietary needs, and reserve if the meal anchors your afternoon.

Continue to Na Kampě and the Čertovka stream, then use Kampa’s park for a shorter finish beside the river. A Museum Kampa visit is an optional, separately ticketed art outing, not part of the bridge crossing. If you prefer fewer steps, stay with the bridge and nearby streets instead of extending the walk around the park.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

03

Day two morning: Castle hill as the main visit

Use PID’s current planner to choose an approach to Prague Castle that suits your mobility and accommodation. Walking uphill via Nerudova is an outing in itself; arrive with enough energy for the interiors you want. The main circuit covers St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St George’s Basilica and Golden Lane. Choose available buildings from that circuit and allow a lunch break before deciding on anything extra. The Cathedral’s Great South Tower is a separate admission.

For a guided or bookable alternative, consider this Prague Castle entry ticket for the self-guided circuit. It does not include a live guide or the separate Great South Tower. Bypassing the ticket-purchase queue does not remove security or building queues; check the dated closures and selected ticket scope.

04

October restrictions can change day two

Reviewed 13 October 2026: the Old Royal Palace is scheduled to close 23–29 October. On 28 October the whole Castle area closes from 15:00, ticket sales end at 14:00 and visitor facilities admit their last visitors at 14:30; the Royal Gardens and Stag Moat close all day. St Vitus has restricted hours on 16 and 17 October. Keep Old Town, Kampa or an available National Museum visit as the alternative. Packtricia will recheck the notices; readers should always check the venue before travelling. Do not treat the end of a notice as confirmed reopening.

05

Day two afternoon: a café finish or a wet-weather museum

If the Castle morning has been enough, return to your accommodation or choose a separate café outing. Café Louvre on Národní 22 offers a researched pastry stop: its dessert menu includes warm apple strudel and Sacher cake. It is across the river, so allow the transfer instead of describing it as a Castle-side lunch. In sustained rain, replace the hill outing with the National Museum at the top of Wenceslas Square and choose a small selection of collections rather than trying to add the whole museum after the Castle.

06

Pack for pauses as well as walking

Test your shoes on steps before travelling and keep a rain layer within reach. A removable knit helps when a warm interior follows a windy bridge crossing; winter gloves matter most when you stop to look at façades. Keep tickets and your return route available on your phone, with a power bank if needed. Let Packtricia tailor clothes and quantities to your actual dates and plans.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.
