Český Krumlov Castle and tower above the Vltava on a winter evening
Český Krumlov · First visit

A first Český Krumlov weekend: river streets, Castle and photography

Give the old town and one Castle choice a day, then explore the river and Fotoatelier Seidel at an easier pace. Keep the seasonal gardens and paid interiors as separate decisions.

01

Day one morning: the square and river crossing

Begin at Svornosti Square, then follow Radniční towards the Barber’s Bridge and cross into Latrán. Look back across the river before continuing towards the Castle entrance. The old town’s short distances can hide uneven cobbles and climbing, so leave room for slow pauses rather than measuring the morning by streets covered. Saint Jošt’s green-topped tower is a useful riverside landmark; it is different from Saint Vitus Church and the Castle’s rounded painted tower.

For a guided or bookable alternative, consider this private Český Krumlov walking tour for a guided Old Town introduction. Confirm language, meeting arrangements and the chosen route; an optional Castle visit does not establish included interior, tower or theatre admission.

02

Choose one Castle visit for the afternoon

If Renaissance and Baroque interiors appeal, select Route I and its actual language and session. For a more independent visit, choose the Castle Museum and Tower ticket instead. The tower involves 162 steps, so it should remain optional for anyone who does not want that climb. A museum ticket does not include all guided apartments or the Baroque Theatre. As checked on 14 October 2026, Route II’s nineteenth-century rooms have no scheduled sessions and lie outside their usual May–September season.

03

Make time for a meal in the old town

Return towards the square for Krčma Šatlava in Šatlavská Street if open-fire cooking suits your group. The operator and tourism directory describe grilled meat prepared over an open fire; ask about the current dishes and dietary needs rather than relying on its older banquet menu. For a smaller café stop, Masná 130 offers coffee and cakes. Its published brunch, including grilled cheese with kimchi, is a main-season morning service, not an all-day promise.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

04

Day two: photography and the Linecká side

Cross towards Linecká for Fotoatelier Seidel at number 272. Its historic studio, cameras, glass negatives and family rooms give the town a different story from aristocratic Castle interiors. Choose an audioguide visit within the opening window or book a guided tour ahead. A costume portrait session is a separate experience and needs its own arrangement. Leave time for a gentle town-park and river pause before returning to the centre, rather than adding another timed tour immediately.

05

Keep the seasonal outdoor extension flexible

The Castle Garden normally opens April–October, with a shorter October day. If weather and admission allow, extend a courtyard walk towards the garden; otherwise enjoy the Castle exterior from the public town route. Bellaria is not automatically open just because the garden is. Packtricia will recheck the recorded seasons, while readers should consult the operator before travelling. In steady rain, prioritise a confirmed museum visit and shorten the exposed viewpoints rather than forcing the complete outdoor plan.

06

Arrive with a plan for luggage and the return

The historic centre is a pedestrian zone with visitor vehicle restrictions. Check the official arrival guidance and arrange luggage access with your accommodation rather than driving into the streets. The railway station is farther from the centre and uphill compared with the main bus approach; use the live timetable if a local connection helps. Tested shoes, rain protection and an adjustable layer fit both days. Seidel closes Mondays and takes a midday break, so swap the days when its actual timetable requires it.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.
