A Český Krumlov river walk: Barber’s Bridge, Latrán and town views

Use the river’s bridges and three distinct towers to orient a relaxed old-town walk. Keep the route on public streets, with a shorter option and a researched café break.

01

Use Svornosti Square as the starting anchor

Start at Svornosti Square and follow Radniční towards the Barber’s Bridge. This gives you a clear link between the inner town and Latrán rather than an aimless circuit of souvenir streets. Pause where there is space to look along the water and notice how the Castle rises above the opposite bank. Keep the bridge clear for people crossing; it is both a viewpoint and a route through town. Shoes with reliable grip help on damp stone and cobbles.

For a guided or bookable alternative, consider this private Český Krumlov walking tour for a guided Old Town introduction. Confirm language, meeting arrangements and the chosen route; an optional Castle visit does not establish included interior, tower or theatre admission.

02

Separate the three towers in the skyline

The rounded painted Castle tower belongs to the Castle complex. Saint Jošt’s green-topped riverside tower is a landmark of the former church on Latrán, while Saint Vitus has a pointed Gothic spire above the inner-town roofs. Learning that distinction makes the bends in the river easier to read. The photograph in this guide shows Saint Jošt beside the Vltava; it does not depict Saint Vitus or promise entry to a functioning church at that riverside building.

03

Latrán and the Castle edge

Continue into Latrán for the change from bridge views to enclosed streets beneath the Castle. If your legs and the conditions suit it, approach the courtyards for another perspective on the town. Leave paid rooms and the tower out unless you have deliberately chosen their ticket. The Cloak Bridge connects later Castle courtyards, but its upper enclosed corridors belong to a separate interior route. Do not assume that a public exterior viewpoint grants access to the passageways above it.

04

Return through the inner town for a café pause

Back across the river, turn towards Masná for Masná 130. Its operator lists coffee and homemade cakes, making it a researched break within the old-town portion of the route. Brunch is advertised for main-season mornings on selected weekdays, so ask about the actual service rather than arriving late expecting grilled cheese with kimchi. If you prefer a fuller meal, Šatlava’s open-fire cooking is a different nearby option; check current availability and dietary choices directly.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

05

Add the Linecká and town-park side only if useful

For a longer walk, use the town’s bridge connections towards Linecká and the town park. Fotoatelier Seidel at Linecká 272 is a worthwhile indoor addition if its actual opening window fits, with studio equipment and photographic records distinct from Castle collections. Its normal Monday closure and midday break matter. Keep this extension optional: a square, bridge and Latrán outing already offers a coherent short route. There is no need to add a boat ride to enjoy the river.

06

Shorten the route for weather or uneven footing

In wet or icy conditions, stay with the square, a careful bridge crossing and a café break, leaving the higher Castle paths for better footing. In heavy rain, a confirmed museum visit is preferable to standing at every view. Historic cobbles, steps and slopes mean that a compact town is not automatically an easy step-free circuit. Ask the Information Centre about an appropriate route for your needs, carry a rain shell and leave time for the journey back to your accommodation.
