Charles Bridge to Kampa: statues, stream and a Czech lunch

Walk from Old Town’s bridge entrance to Lesser Town and Kampa, with clear route anchors, an optional art visit and a researched Czech meal stop off the bridge.

01

Begin at the Old Town end

Start around Křižovnické Square beside the Old Town Bridge Tower, then enter Charles Bridge on foot. The tower is a landmark for this route; climbing it is an optional paid outing. Look along the bridge towards Lesser Town before setting off, so the tower pair at the far end becomes your next anchor. Keep your bag secure and leave space for people crossing while you pause for photographs.

02

Look at the statues without blocking the crossing

The sculptural groups give the bridge more to look at than its river view alone. Pick a few to examine and notice how the figures frame the Castle hill skyline. Move towards the edge where there is safe room for a pause, then continue rather than stopping abruptly in the stream of pedestrians. This is a walk to enjoy at your own pace, with no need to attach a guaranteed quiet hour or precise crossing time to it. Rain and crowding can make the stone paving a reason to shorten the outing.

03

Choose a lunch on the Lesser Town side

After reaching the Lesser Town bridge towers, consider a meal at Lokál U Bílé kuželky on nearby Míšeňská 12. Prague City Tourism identifies its traditional Czech cooking, and the operator’s checked menu gives concrete choices such as goulash with dumplings or pork schnitzel. It works as a deliberate break after the crossing rather than a snack bought while standing on the bridge. Check the menu for your visit, explain dietary requirements and reserve when you want a fixed meal stop. Beer is an optional part of the meal, not a requirement for enjoying the place.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

04

Turn towards Na Kampě and the millstream

For the direct continuation, use the signed connection from the Lesser Town end towards Na Kampě. The bridge-to-Kampa stairs are not a step-free route; if stairs are unsuitable, approach through Lesser Town’s streets and verify the accessible connection before setting out. Find the small square below the bridge, then follow available paths towards Čertovka, the millstream separating Kampa from Lesser Town. Look at the water and buildings from public paths, keeping residential doorways clear.

05

Finish in the park or choose modern art

Continue into Kampa’s park for a river-side finish with a view back towards Old Town. Museum Kampa at Sova Mills is an optional separate visit for Central European modern art, including works by František Kupka. Verify its current exhibitions, tickets and access before making it the rainy-day replacement. A park walk does not include museum admission. If you already chose a tower or a long lunch, the outdoor park makes a useful endpoint without another substantial interior.

06

Shorten the route when the weather turns

Stop at Na Kampě after lunch if wind or wet paving makes the longer river section unappealing. In a thunderstorm, postpone the exposed bridge crossing rather than using an umbrella as the whole plan. PID’s current journey planner can help with the return from Lesser Town, avoiding an obligatory second crossing. Pack tested shoes, a light rain shell and a warmer layer for slow river pauses; use your actual forecast to choose how much insulation to bring.
