Barra da Lagoa channel mouth and its stone jetty beside the beach
Florianópolis · Coastal nature outing

Barra da Lagoa’s channel and turtle-conservation centre

Give Barra da Lagoa a day with room for the journey. Pair the working channel and beach with Projeto Tamar, then choose a short shore walk instead of turning a relaxed visit into a chain of rocky trails.

01

Arrive with a return plan

Use Barra da Lagoa as the destination, checking your bus journey with Consórcio Fênix or arranging transport. The east-coast district is a separate outing from the centre; traffic and transfers can change the journey considerably. Save the return route before leaving rather than assuming the beach and bridge are neighbouring stops.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Watch the channel from land

Begin beside the channel near the beach. Notice how boats move between the lagoon and the sea and how the jetty defines the channel mouth. This is a working waterway, so keep the route on land rather than treating the channel as a swimming pool. The nearby pedestrian bridge gives another viewpoint; follow current signs and keep clear of boats and mooring areas.

03

Give Projeto Tamar a proper visit

We recommend Projeto Tamar’s Florianópolis visitor centre for its conservation story as well as the turtles. The centre connects its tanks and themed displays with the threats facing marine turtles and the work done in southern Brazil. The operator currently lists Wednesday–Monday visiting, making Tuesday a closure day; confirm before travelling. Admission, an arranged educational activity and any special programme are separate decisions.

04

Choose the beach or a short Prainha walk

After a break, choose time on the main beach or the walk across the pedestrian bridge towards Prainha. The latter involves a path beyond the flat village streets, so use shoes with grip and turn back if rain makes the surface slippery. Leave the natural pools and longer hill trails as separate outings requiring appropriate conditions. There is no need to scramble over wet rocks just because they appear on a tourism map.

05

Keep swimming optional

Check the environmental agency’s current bathing-water report for the relevant sampling point, plus local lifeguard advice and flags. A pleasant-looking channel or calm patch of water does not establish that swimming is suitable. If conditions are poor, keep the channel views, beach walk and Tamar visit; the day works without entering the sea. Pack swimwear only if you intend to use it, and keep a dry change separate from walking clothes.

06

Make the wet-day version shorter

Projeto Tamar describes its visitor facilities as suitable for rainy-day visits, but the journey and shore remain exposed. In persistent bad weather, keep the centre and a brief channel view rather than extending the coastal path. Carry a hooded shell, closed shoes and a light layer for the return. Check educational activities before booking: a turtle release is not guaranteed with an ordinary visit.

Florianópolis waterfront and the modern bridges connecting island and mainland

A first weekend in Florianópolis

Spend one day in the historic centre and another around Barra da Lagoa. Two well-chosen districts leave room for meals, museums and island traffic, without pretending you can see every beach in a weekend.

Lagoinha do Leste beach, lagoon and forested hills viewed from Morro da Coroa

Lagoinha do Leste: choose the hike before chasing the view

Lagoinha do Leste pairs a remote beach and lagoon with Atlantic Forest hills. Decide between the beach route and the extra climb to Morro da Coroa before setting out; the summit photograph is not a promise of an easy beach walk.

Surf-themed mannequin beside a sign reading I love Sambaqui in Florianópolis

Santo Antônio de Lisboa and Sambaqui: a bay-side afternoon

Choose the island’s northwest shore for a slower afternoon of old village streets, a Portuguese seafood meal and bay views. Santo Antônio and Sambaqui fit together; a distant beach or fort cruise does not need to be added.

Steel towers and trusses of Florianópolis’s Hercílio Luz bridge

The market, historic squares and Hercílio Luz bridge

Start with Florianópolis’s historic squares and market, then finish near the old suspension bridge. This is a city walk with a proper food stop; it does not need an island beach transfer to feel complete.

Black-and-white Farol da Barra above the walls of Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra

Barra lighthouse, the nautical museum and the shore

Use Barra for an unhurried mix of maritime history and sea views. The lighthouse grounds and Porto da Barra beach suit different parts of the day; swimming is optional.

Avenida Boa Viagem street sign beside Recife’s oceanfront promenade

Boa Viagem: a coastal walk and Dona Lindu park

Build a Boa Viagem outing around the promenade, neighbourhood square and Dona Lindu’s architecture. The coast is worth visiting without entering the sea; leave room to shorten the walk when the heat or rain changes the day.
