Steel towers and trusses of Florianópolis’s Hercílio Luz bridge
Florianópolis · City centre walk

The market, historic squares and Hercílio Luz bridge

Start with Florianópolis’s historic squares and market, then finish near the old suspension bridge. This is a city walk with a proper food stop; it does not need an island beach transfer to feel complete.

01

Begin around Praça XV

Start at Praça XV de Novembro. Look at the old fig tree and the buildings around the square, then choose Museu de Florianópolis for the city’s history or Palácio Cruz e Sousa for the state’s historic setting. Check the chosen venue’s programme and admission. Museu de Florianópolis currently closes on Tuesdays; one ticket does not cover both museums.

Museu Victor Meirelles, associated with the artist’s childhood home and art collections, is another worthwhile central museum to know about. At our 10 October 2026 review it was closed for operational reasons, following the official notice of 21 September; spontaneous visits, group visits and film sessions were suspended. No reopening date was confirmed. Packtricia will check for reopening, but always check the museum before travelling. Use Museu de Florianópolis as the available alternative rather than making Victor Meirelles a required stop.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

For an optional booked version, compare the Florianópolis history, art and gastronomy walk. Confirm the selected tasting option, language and meeting point. A city walk does not guarantee lunch at the guide’s named market restaurant or a fixed visit to every museum.

02

Continue to the market

Walk towards Largo da Alfândega and Mercado Público. Browse the working stalls before sitting down: seafood counters, everyday shopping and the bars are different parts of the experience. The food businesses keep their own service arrangements, so the market building’s hours alone do not establish when a particular kitchen will serve lunch.

03

Make a specific lunch choice

We recommend Box 32 for a seafood snack on this route. Independent recommendations and visitor accounts repeatedly identify its shrimp pastel; check the current menu and price before ordering, especially if comparing a snack with a plate to share. The name is historical: the operator gives its present location as Box 04S in the south wing. It is a paid bar stop, not an included tasting just because you are walking through the market.

04

Leave time for the bridge approach

Continue towards Parque da Luz at the island end of Hercílio Luz bridge. Look at the steel towers and trusses from the approach, then use the designated pedestrian way if current access permits. The old suspension bridge is distinct from the modern road bridges nearby. You do not need to cross all the way and back to enjoy its structure and bay views.

05

Choose a shorter or wetter version

For a shorter walk, keep Praça XV, the market and lunch. For a bridge-focused outing, begin at Parque da Luz and use the tourism bureau’s suggested Top Market, in the former Hoepcke embroidery factory, as the nearby food-hall alternative. In persistent rain, choose an available central museum and the market, leaving the exposed bridge for another window. Carry a wind layer beside your rain shell; a still square can feel different from the bay-facing approach.

Florianópolis waterfront and the modern bridges connecting island and mainland

A first weekend in Florianópolis

Spend one day in the historic centre and another around Barra da Lagoa. Two well-chosen districts leave room for meals, museums and island traffic, without pretending you can see every beach in a weekend.

Lagoinha do Leste beach, lagoon and forested hills viewed from Morro da Coroa

Lagoinha do Leste: choose the hike before chasing the view

Lagoinha do Leste pairs a remote beach and lagoon with Atlantic Forest hills. Decide between the beach route and the extra climb to Morro da Coroa before setting out; the summit photograph is not a promise of an easy beach walk.

Surf-themed mannequin beside a sign reading I love Sambaqui in Florianópolis

Santo Antônio de Lisboa and Sambaqui: a bay-side afternoon

Choose the island’s northwest shore for a slower afternoon of old village streets, a Portuguese seafood meal and bay views. Santo Antônio and Sambaqui fit together; a distant beach or fort cruise does not need to be added.

Barra da Lagoa channel mouth and its stone jetty beside the beach

Barra da Lagoa’s channel and turtle-conservation centre

Give Barra da Lagoa a day with room for the journey. Pair the working channel and beach with Projeto Tamar, then choose a short shore walk instead of turning a relaxed visit into a chain of rocky trails.

Historic buildings around Marco Zero seen across the Recife waterfront

A first weekend in Recife

Use the first day for Recife Antigo and the second for a deliberate art outing in Várzea. The harbour sculpture park is an optional crossing, not a substitute for either inland Brennand collection.

People sitting on Ipanema beach with Rio’s Dois Irmãos peaks in the distance

A first weekend in Rio de Janeiro

Give Rio’s two major viewpoints separate days, keeping the Botanical Garden or centre as alternatives when cloud changes the plan. This makes room for transport, a proper meal and return queues instead of packing every famous sight into one tour.
