Florianópolis waterfront and the modern bridges connecting island and mainland
Florianópolis · Weekend guide

A first weekend in Florianópolis

Spend one day in the historic centre and another around Barra da Lagoa. Two well-chosen districts leave room for meals, museums and island traffic, without pretending you can see every beach in a weekend.

01

Day one morning: squares and one museum

Begin at Praça XV de Novembro, looking at the old fig tree and surrounding architecture. Choose Museu de Florianópolis or Palácio Cruz e Sousa as an optional indoor stop, checking that venue’s opening and programme first. The city museum currently closes on Tuesdays. Continue towards Largo da Alfândega and Mercado Público, keeping the morning in the historic centre.

Victor Meirelles’s art museum remains worth including in your picture of the centre, but it was closed at our 10 October 2026 review. Ibram suspended public and group visits and film sessions from 21 September for operational reasons, without a confirmed reopening. Packtricia will recheck its availability; always check before travelling. Keep the city museum as your available alternative.

02

Day one lunch: the market with a purpose

Browse the market before choosing lunch. Box 32 is our suggested seafood-snack stop: consider the shrimp pastel, checking the day’s menu, price and portion before ordering. Find the business in the south wing at its current Box 04S address rather than searching for a stall numbered 32. Leave time to sit down; food is a separate expense from any walking tour or museum ticket.

03

Day one afternoon: the old bridge

Continue to Parque da Luz for the Hercílio Luz bridge approach. Look at the old suspension structure and bay views, using the designated pedestrian way when available. Shorten this stretch if the weather is uncomfortable; the modern road bridges in the waterfront photograph are different structures. Top Market, in the former embroidery factory near the approach, is an alternative sheltered stop if you chose the bridge over a museum.

04

Day two morning: travel east, then learn about turtles

Travel to Barra da Lagoa with the outward and return route checked. Begin at Projeto Tamar’s visitor centre for its marine-turtle conservation displays, or reverse the order if its admission schedule suits a later visit. The operator currently lists Wednesday–Monday opening, with Tuesday closed. The usual visit does not guarantee a turtle release or an educational activity that requires advance arrangement.

For a booked alternative, compare the Florianópolis centre, beach and nature tour. A long combined city-and-coast alternative rather than this exact two-day plan. Confirm transport and walking time, language and current recent reviews; meals and Projeto Tamar entry are not established inclusions.

05

Day two afternoon: channel and a short shore route

After a meal break, walk by the working channel and choose the main beach or the shorter route over the pedestrian bridge towards Prainha. These are alternatives to an ambitious hill trail, not the start of an obligation to reach every natural pool. Check local flags and the current bathing-water report if swimming interests you. Keep the day as a land outing when conditions are unsuitable.

06

Keep an easier and a rainy-day version

With only one day, choose the centre or Barra da Lagoa according to your interests and accommodation. In prolonged rain, use an available central museum and the market instead of forcing a coastal outing. A full island tour, Anhatomirim excursion or Lagoinha do Leste hike needs a different day and separate transport or booking checks. Carry comfortable shoes, a wind and rain layer, sun protection and a small bag; add swimwear only for the shore plan.

Lagoinha do Leste beach, lagoon and forested hills viewed from Morro da Coroa

Lagoinha do Leste: choose the hike before chasing the view

Lagoinha do Leste pairs a remote beach and lagoon with Atlantic Forest hills. Decide between the beach route and the extra climb to Morro da Coroa before setting out; the summit photograph is not a promise of an easy beach walk.

Santo Antônio de Lisboa and Sambaqui: a bay-side afternoon

Choose the island’s northwest shore for a slower afternoon of old village streets, a Portuguese seafood meal and bay views. Santo Antônio and Sambaqui fit together; a distant beach or fort cruise does not need to be added.

Steel towers and trusses of Florianópolis’s Hercílio Luz bridge

The market, historic squares and Hercílio Luz bridge

Start with Florianópolis’s historic squares and market, then finish near the old suspension bridge. This is a city walk with a proper food stop; it does not need an island beach transfer to feel complete.

Barra da Lagoa channel mouth and its stone jetty beside the beach

Barra da Lagoa’s channel and turtle-conservation centre

Give Barra da Lagoa a day with room for the journey. Pair the working channel and beach with Projeto Tamar, then choose a short shore walk instead of turning a relaxed visit into a chain of rocky trails.

Historic buildings around Marco Zero seen across the Recife waterfront

A first weekend in Recife

Use the first day for Recife Antigo and the second for a deliberate art outing in Várzea. The harbour sculpture park is an optional crossing, not a substitute for either inland Brennand collection.

People sitting on Ipanema beach with Rio’s Dois Irmãos peaks in the distance

A first weekend in Rio de Janeiro

Give Rio’s two major viewpoints separate days, keeping the Botanical Garden or centre as alternatives when cloud changes the plan. This makes room for transport, a proper meal and return queues instead of packing every famous sight into one tour.
