Start at the square and church
Use Praça de Boa Viagem as the meeting point rather than trying to cover the whole coastline. Look at the exterior of Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem beside the square, then turn towards the promenade. An interior visit depends on parish access and services, so keep it optional. The square, church and sea give the first stretch three distinct things to look at without requiring tickets.
Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.
Follow the promenade towards Dona Lindu
Walk south along Avenida Boa Viagem on the pedestrian side of the seafront. Look for the reef line offshore when the tide reveals it, and compare the busy urban avenue with the open horizon. Keep clear of the cycle lane and use crossings to reach the park side of the road. Start early enough to enjoy the walk before the strongest heat; turn back at the square if a longer exposed stretch would be uncomfortable.
Give the park a proper stop
At Parque Dona Lindu, look at the contrasting curved forms of the Niemeyer buildings rather than treating the park as only a way back to the road. Follow the public paths and use the playground if travelling with children. The site also houses Teatro Luiz Mendonça and Galeria Janete Costa. Choose a current exhibition or performance only after checking its schedule; a park visit does not include a theatre seat or guarantee an open gallery.
Use the square for a food or craft pause
Return to Praça de Boa Viagem for a look at the food and craft stalls when they are trading. The municipal visitor route highlights tapioca and bolo de rolo here: ask a vendor what fillings or portions are available and check the price before ordering. Tapioca makes a practical snack stop, while a wrapped portion of bolo de rolo can travel back with you. Check the square’s current programme if you want live music, rather than planning around a past event.
Keep the sea separate from the walk
Boa Viagem has shark-risk warnings. Follow posted restrictions, flags and lifeguard instructions, and do not assume that shallow water or a visible reef makes swimming safe. CEMIT’s September 2026 advice also warns about river mouths, murky water and strong currents. This route requires no swimming, snorkelling or surf activity. If you want time in the water, first get current advice for the exact place; a different beach excursion has its own journey and conditions.
Choose a shorter or rainy-day version
For a short outing, stay with the square, church exterior and a nearby promenade stretch. In persistent rain, choose an advertised indoor gallery visit or theatre performance, confirming access before travelling; a closed venue is not a rain shelter. Keep a change of plan available, such as Recife Antigo’s Paço do Frevo on its own visiting schedule. Do not add a cross-city museum simply to fill the afternoon.
Pack for the pavement and the weather
Wear comfortable walking shoes or secure sandals, light clothing and sun protection. Carry water and a compact rain layer; keep your phone and any purchases in a dry pouch. A light extra layer can help in air-conditioned transport or a theatre. Save the return pickup location before leaving the park. This is a flexible neighbourhood outing, so choose a transport connection rather than feeling obliged to walk every metre back.
