Gamla Uppsala: royal mounds, archaeology and an Odinsborg lunch

Give Gamla Uppsala a separate outing from the city-centre cathedral. The royal mounds, nearby museum and a Swedish lunch fit together without racing between distant sights.

01

Travel to Old Uppsala deliberately

Head to Gamla Uppsala Museum rather than searching only for central Uppsala. Destination Uppsala lists bus 2 to Kungshögarna; confirm the current departure and return in the UL journey planner. Keep this trip as a half-day suggestion, with extra time if you want a longer landscape walk.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Walk the paths beside the mounds

Use the established paths around the Royal Mounds and read the interpretation before deciding what the landscape represents. The major burials predate the Viking Age and belong to the earlier Iron Age world. Avoid treating legends about named gods or kings as confirmed identities, and follow site signs rather than assuming every mound can be climbed.

For a booked alternative, compare the Gamla Uppsala Museum admission. Museum entry does not include travel from central Uppsala or a guided excursion. Check the actual programme and language of scheduled visits rather than assuming a tour at every arrival.

03

Put the finds in context indoors

Visit the adjacent museum to connect the landscape with archaeological objects and stories of the Vendel and Viking periods. Its children’s displays and scheduled tours can give families a more focused visit. Check which activities run on your date; the outdoor site does not share the museum’s indoor timetable.

04

Choose Odinsborg for the pause

We recommend Odinsborg for a meal beside the historic area. The tourism board highlights Swedish meatballs, waffles and its distinctive wooden building. Check the current menu and kitchen hours before setting out, particularly outside the main visitor season. The location lets lunch fit the outing without returning to the city halfway through.

05

Keep the weather alternative clear

In wind or cold rain, make the museum the main visit and take only a short walk to see the mounds. In dry weather, extend along the surrounding paths after lunch. Disagården is another worthwhile nearby open-air heritage stop, but check its seasonal building access before adding interiors to the plan. Wear shoes with grip for wet paths.

For a booked alternative, compare the Uppsala and Sigtuna Viking-sites trip from Stockholm. This is a long Stockholm-departure excursion rather than a local Uppsala walk. Confirm pickup eligibility, timetable and museum admission; a Gamla Uppsala stop does not establish interior entry.

A first weekend in Uppsala: cathedral stories, castle views and ancient mounds

Keep Saturday in Uppsala’s historic centre, with the cathedral and castle hill as anchors. Give Sunday to Gamla Uppsala’s archaeology rather than treating the royal mounds as a rushed extra after a full museum day.

A Gamla Stan lane leading towards Riddarholmen Church

Gamla Stan on foot: Stortorget, quiet lanes and Riddarholmen

Use Gamla Stan’s squares as anchors instead of wandering without a plan. This walk pairs Stortorget and a proper fika stop with quieter lanes and the waterfront around Riddarholmen, leaving paid museum visits optional.
