Uppsala’s Fyris River and castle hill: one walk, one museum choice

Pair the Fyris River with Uppsala’s castle hill for a walk that changes level and view. Choose one castle museum, then leave space for lunch rather than assuming all the collections can be seen on a single ticket.

01

Start beside the Fyris

Use Fyris River and its central bridges as the route’s lower-level anchors. Walk a short stretch before heading towards the castle, rather than committing to a long river loop and then rushing the hill. Old paving and wet leaves make grippy footwear useful in autumn.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Climb for the setting

Head to Uppsala Castle for its pink façade and elevated surroundings. The grounds offer a different view of the cathedral and city from the riverside. Take breaks on the ascent; the climb is part of the outing, not a transfer that needs to disappear from the plan.

03

Pick one collection

The castle houses Uppsala Art Museum, Uppsala Castle Museum and Vasaborgen. Choose the one that matches your interest and check its current admission and opening. A rooftop walk is a separate arranged activity, not an automatic extension to any museum ticket. The grounds can be the shorter alternative when your chosen interior is unavailable.

For a booked alternative, compare the Uppsala private family city walk. Castle courtyard is not a museum or rooftop ticket. Confirm seasonal Linnaeus Garden access, cathedral entry and any optional interior fees; meals are separate.

04

Use the castle café if it fits

The Uppsala Castle café is in the vaults beneath the Art Museum, with sandwiches, salads and lunch options described by the local tourism office. Check current service before choosing it for the main meal. In warmer months Café Victoria in the Botanical Garden is another worthwhile choice, but it is seasonal, not an October fallback.

05

Include the gardens honestly

The Botanical Garden’s outdoor spaces are worth considering below the castle. Café Victoria was outside its published May–September season when reviewed on 8 October 2026. We will check its seasonal return; always check the venue before going. Use the castle café or return to the central river area for a meal while the garden café is unavailable.
