Uppsala’s Botanical Garden: baroque paths and a tropical escape

Give Uppsala’s Botanical Garden its own outing, from the formal beds to tropical plants indoors. The garden below the castle and the separate Linnaeus Garden have different access rules.

01

Start with the formal garden

Begin at Uppsala Botanical Garden and follow the central view towards the columned Linneanum. Look at the symmetry of the beds and clipped planting before exploring the looser paths. In winter, the layout remains interesting even when flowers are scarce; plan for cold hands and slippery paths rather than expecting summer colour.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Choose an indoor collection

Continue to the Tropical Greenhouse. Compare orchids and climbing rainforest plants with the dry-adapted succulents. Look for useful plants such as cocoa and oil palm: labels connect the collection to familiar food and everyday products. Admission is separate from the free outdoor walk.

03

Distinguish the two gardens

The Linneanum orangery belongs to this Botanical Garden. It is not the Linnaeus Garden and Museum on Svartbäcksgatan. The latter’s garden was closed for the winter when reviewed on 8 October 2026, and its museum accepted pre-booked groups only. It is still worth considering in its public season. Packtricia will check its return; always confirm before going. The Botanical Garden and open greenhouse are the current alternative.

04

Plan food outside the closed café

Café Victoria was outside its published May–September season on review. After the plants, return towards the centre for Güntherska, whose bakery and café offer a useful fika stop. Choose a pastry and hot drink, or check its current lunch options. This adds a separate walk; it is not a café inside the garden.

05

Use the right gate and day

The university closes the gates facing the castle, Segerstedt Building and Carolina Rediviva from the first snow until 1 May. Check the current entrance route before descending from the castle. Greenhouse and orangery hours differ, and the greenhouse has Monday and holiday closures. On a short visit, choose the formal garden plus one indoor collection.

The Royal Mounds and walking paths at Gamla Uppsala

Gamla Uppsala: royal mounds, archaeology and an Odinsborg lunch

Give Gamla Uppsala a separate outing from the city-centre cathedral. The royal mounds, nearby museum and a Swedish lunch fit together without racing between distant sights.

The square outside Uppsala Cathedral in autumn

Uppsala Cathedral: tombs, treasury choices and a café pause

Use Uppsala Cathedral as the centre of a focused historic outing. Its royal and scholarly memorials reward a slower visit, while the separate treasury and nearby café let you decide how much of the morning to spend indoors.

A pink pedestrian bridge over Uppsala’s Fyris River

Uppsala’s Fyris River and castle hill: one walk, one museum choice

Pair the Fyris River with Uppsala’s castle hill for a walk that changes level and view. Choose one castle museum, then leave space for lunch rather than assuming all the collections can be seen on a single ticket.

Uppsala Cathedral’s twin Gothic spires in autumn mist

A first weekend in Uppsala: cathedral stories, castle views and ancient mounds

Keep Saturday in Uppsala’s historic centre, with the cathedral and castle hill as anchors. Give Sunday to Gamla Uppsala’s archaeology rather than treating the royal mounds as a rushed extra after a full museum day.

Fotografiska’s brick waterfront building in Stockholm

Fotografiska: photography, waterfront views and lunch choices

Use Fotografiska for a photography visit with a waterfront finish. Check the current exhibitions first, then decide whether lunch or an evening drink fits your museum time.

A Gamla Stan lane leading towards Riddarholmen Church

Gamla Stan on foot: Stortorget, quiet lanes and Riddarholmen

Use Gamla Stan’s squares as anchors instead of wandering without a plan. This walk pairs Stortorget and a proper fika stop with quieter lanes and the waterfront around Riddarholmen, leaving paid museum visits optional.
