A first weekend in Batumi: old-town squares and the Black Sea

Give the compact old town and waterfront one day, then keep the Botanical Garden as a separate outing. This two-day plan leaves space for food, wet-weather pauses and a shorter version when the sea turns rough.

01

Day one morning: Europe Square to Piazza

Begin at Europe Square with the Medea monument and the astronomical clock. Read the information board beneath the dial: this is a modern clock with astronomical indicators, not a medieval survival. The patterned facades around the square give you plenty to look at without booking an interior visit.

Continue through the old streets to Piazza. Look down at its figurative marble mosaic as well as up at the clock tower and arcades. Piazza’s tower is different from the astronomical clock near Europe Square. Keep church interiors optional and follow dress and photography instructions if services allow a visit.

02

Choose an independent walk or a guide

If you want help connecting the port, squares and monuments, take a guided central walk instead of repeating the same sights independently. Keep the start of the day flexible until you have checked the meeting instructions.

For a guided alternative, compare the Batumi Guided Walking Tour from Budget Georgia Kutaisi. The listed English-language walk links the old-town squares, port and boulevard. It replaces this independent central walk rather than adding another circuit. The guide and walking tour are included; the optional Black Sea boat ride costs extra. Check your date, meeting point and selected option before booking, and leave time for a separate meal.

03

Day one afternoon: port and Miracle Park

From the old-town streets, walk towards the public waterfront and Miracle Park. The small lighthouse, Ferris wheel and Alphabet Tower form an easy group of anchors. Look for the Georgian letters along the tower’s double-helix structure, then continue towards Ali and Nino. Do not rely on a particular sculpture-motion schedule to make the stop worthwhile.

Treat rides, tower admission and boat trips as separate decisions. Looking at the structures from outside already gives the walk a clear focus. In rough weather, shorten the exposed section and return to the old-town streets rather than waiting by the water.

04

A proper meal and a shorter evening

For a sit-down Adjarian meal, try Retro’s Takaishvili Street branch at number 10, near 6 May Park. Its signature cheese boat gives this part of the day a local focus. Ask how the egg is prepared if that matters to you, and check that navigation points to this branch before setting off. Leave a proper meal break rather than trying to eat while completing the entire waterfront.

Choose a modest stretch of the boulevard for an evening walk after the meal. You do not need to cover its full length: shaded garden alleys and the sea-facing promenade offer different experiences, and a comfortable turnaround is more useful than collecting every fountain.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

05

Day two: a separate Botanical Garden outing

Use the morning for the Botanical Garden at Green Cape, outside the compact centre. Check the garden’s own admission information and the route to your intended entrance before leaving. The official tourism description identifies lower and upper parks, floristic sections and a Colchic reserve; choose a manageable circuit rather than assuming a quick flat stroll.

Wear shoes that grip damp slopes and carry water and a waterproof layer. Garden admission, guide services and electric-vehicle services have separate conditions. Arrange a return plan and leave the rest of the day loose for lunch and travel back. If heavy rain makes the slopes unappealing, spend that time in the old-town cafes and return to the garden on a better day.

06

Pack for humid air and wet paving

Carry rain cover even when the morning looks clear. Summer needs breathable clothes and sun protection; winter calls for warmer layers under weather-resistant outerwear. The coastal forecast does not describe the high mountains, so research any onward mountain trip separately.

Keep a dry layer and documents protected inside your day bag. Swim only when local conditions and posted guidance allow it; a warm day on the promenade is not evidence of safe water conditions.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.
