Day one morning: bath domes and the older streets
Start at Meidan and walk into Abanotubani to see the low brick bath domes and the tiled exterior of Chreli Abano. This is an architectural stop unless you have separately arranged a bath session; a walking tour does not automatically include bathing. Keep the gorge an optional addition only if its visitor path is open and conditions are dry.
Return towards Sioni Cathedral and the lanes around Shardeni. Look at the mix of religious buildings and wooden galleries rather than trying to collect every church interior. Leave room for worshippers and follow posted dress and photography rules. Stop for a proper meal before the afternoon outing; the day is deliberately split rather than a continuous uphill march.
Day one afternoon: cross the river, then decide on the ridge
Cross the Bridge of Peace from the old-city side to Rike Park. Its curved glass canopy gives you a useful contrast with the bath quarter, and the park lets you stop without another climb. In hot weather, keep this part short and take a shaded break.
If the cable car is operating and you are comfortable with uneven paths, take the separate ridge outing to the Mother of Georgia. Otherwise stay with the park and river views. At our 25 October 2026 review, Narikala’s fortress visitor areas remained restricted for restoration. Current local guides disagree on access to the lower church, and no confirmed reopening date was found. Do not make entry or wall climbing part of your plan. Packtricia will check for reopening, but always check the venue before travelling. Use Rike Park and the Bridge of Peace as the available lower-level alternative.
A guided alternative for your first day
A guide can connect the old-city buildings and religious traditions more clearly than a fast independent walk. Keep the rest of that day flexible: the listed route covers several hours on foot, and tastings do not replace a full meal.
For a guided first-day alternative, compare the Tbilisi City Highlights Guided Walking Tour from Gamarjoba Georgia Tours. The listed English-language walk includes a guide, cable car, Georgian pie and lemonade. It replaces the independent old-town outing: check the selected option, meeting point and date. The operator excludes children under five, pregnant travellers and wheelchair users; cable cars stop in windy weather. It does not promise entry to the closed fortress.
Day two morning: Sololaki façades and coffee
Begin near Freedom Square and follow Galaktion Tabidze and Ivane Machabeli streets into Sololaki. Look from the pavement at the different balconies, doors and façade decoration; residential entrances and courtyards are not public attractions. The house at 22 Galaktion Tabidze is a useful exterior anchor for Georgian-inspired ornament. Continue to Shavi’s Garage café at 28 Lado Asatiani Street for a coffee pause: the roaster confirms this Sololaki branch, and the garage-and-courtyard setting fits a slower architectural morning.
Keep this coffee stop separate from lunch. Pick your meal from the businesses actually serving when you visit and check dietary needs directly. If demonstrations affect Freedom Square or nearby routes, leave the area and rearrange the morning rather than walking through a gathering.
Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.
Day two afternoon: choose a market or cathedral outing
For browsing rather than another climb, head to Dry Bridge to look at paintings, old cameras and household objects. The open-air selection depends on which sellers attend and on the weather; ask before photographing stalls and do not assume every old-looking object is an antique. Leave bulky or regulated purchases until you understand how to carry and export them.
Alternatively, make Holy Trinity Cathedral your afternoon focus across the river. Its large forecourt and layered church design deserve a separate visit; arrange transport if another uphill walk would be tiring. Treat it as an active religious complex, with modest clothing and a quiet visit. Choose this or the market, then leave time for dinner rather than squeezing both into a rushed evening.
Pack for slopes, breaks and the actual season
Take shoes with secure grip, a church-covering outfit, water and a removable layer. Summer afternoons can make the ridge uncomfortable; winter frost or wet stone can make the descent the harder part. Use lower streets when the weather turns and keep booked activities subject to their own conditions.
Check current local and official travel advice before setting out, avoid demonstrations and keep a downloaded route and accommodation address accessible. The monthly packing suggestions are a starting point; Packtricia tailors the detailed list and quantities to your dates, luggage and plans.
