Elephant Trunk Hill and its Water Moon arch beside the Li River in Guilin
Guilin · First visit

A first weekend in Guilin: city lakes and the Li River

Spend the first day among Guilin’s central hills and lakes, with a rice-noodle stop between walks. Give the second day to the Li River towards Yangshuo, or choose a shorter city alternative when sailing conditions are unsuitable.

01

Day one morning: meet Guilin’s river landmark

Start at Elephant Trunk Hill. Look for the natural arch between the rock and its river-facing trunk, known as Water Moon Cave. View the hill from the open visitor paths before deciding whether to add any steps; the silhouette is the reason to come, rather than a checklist of every viewpoint.

Use the official scenic-area visitor guidance for the current entrance arrangements. Bring the identity document required by your booking or reservation, and follow barriers near the water. After rain, shorten the visit if stone paths are slippery rather than forcing a climb.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Day one lunch: a bowl before the lakes

We recommend Chongshan Rice Noodles around Zhengyang Pedestrian Street for a practical rice-noodle lunch on this central route. Try dry-mixed noodles if you enjoy a savoury sauce, then adjust the pickles and chilli to your taste. Check the actual branch and current menu; the chain has several locations.

Leave time to sit and eat before continuing. Tell staff about dietary needs before ordering: broth, sauces and toppings may contain meat or peanuts even when they are not obvious from a photograph.

03

Day one afternoon: water, bridges and a shorter evening

Walk the available public paths beside Shanhu Lake, then continue towards Ronghu Lake if the weather and your energy suit. Look across the water at the paired Sun and Moon Pagodas and use the bridges and tree-lined edges as natural turning points. You can keep this to one lake and still have a worthwhile afternoon.

Reviewed 21 October 2026: the operator’s Sun and Moon Pagodas notice announces a closure for upgrades; no reopening was confirmed in the sources checked. Plan available exterior views, not tower entry. Packtricia will check for reopening, and readers should always check the venue before travelling. Eat dinner before considering an optional, separately ticketed city-lake cruise.

04

Day two: make the Li River the main outing

Choose a confirmed Li River cruise towards Yangshuo for karst cliffs, bamboo-lined banks and changing mountain silhouettes. Check whether your boat departs from Zhujiang Pier or Mopanshan Pier; neither should be treated as a walk-up departure beside the central lakes.

Book the actual boat class and passenger details through a verified seller or the official Li River Ticket Office channel. Allow time for the pier transfer, boarding and a meal. Check the final disembarkation point and arrange onward travel from Yangshuo before leaving Guilin; a downstream cruise is not automatically a return trip.

For a packaged river journey, Compare the four-star Li River cruise. Visit Our China lists a four-star boat, buffet lunch and central-Guilin hotel pickup. This is not an English-guided cruise, and hotel drop-off is excluded. Plan your arrival in Yangshuo and any return separately, bring your passport and check the child seating rules. Weather and water levels can change the journey.

05

A shorter second day when you want to stay in town

If you prefer to remain in Guilin, choose Fubo Hill for its river-facing hill and inscribed rock features, using only the open paths. The official operator announced full reopening of Huanzhu Cave on 8 July 2026 after the earlier power-related closure. Recheck notices before relying on cave access.

Have lunch back in the centre and keep the afternoon free for a lakeside stroll or rest. This alternative avoids committing to an out-of-town pier transfer. During heavy rain, choose an indoor meal and a shorter walk when conditions improve; boat and path access can change.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.
