A first weekend in Chengdu: pandas, poetry and tea

Build a weekend around one Panda Base outing and one garden day. Leave space for a long tea break and treat the riverfront as an optional evening, with time for meals and travel between districts.

01

Day one morning: the Panda Base

Start with Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, rather than a similarly named centre in Dujiangyan. Reserve the correct date and morning or afternoon entry session through the base’s official channels. Carry the original identity document used for the booking. Animal behaviour and access vary; a ticket does not promise a particular panda encounter.

Choose a manageable area from the current visitor map, pause at open enclosures, and leave time to move between them. Keep your voice low and follow staff instructions. Comfortable shoes and rain protection matter even if you use an internal shuttle: it does not remove all the walking.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

For a guided Panda Base morning, Compare the half-day Chengdu Panda Base tour. Select the half-day Panda Base option for this weekend plan, not the much longer Leshan combination. Panda Base admission and its internal shuttle are extra on the half-day option; confirm ticket arrangements and the meeting point before booking. Expect substantial walking. The return is to Tianfu Square rather than your hotel.

02

Day one afternoon: return, eat and rest

Return to your accommodation district for lunch and a break. Keep the rest of the afternoon flexible after the outdoor visit. If you want another cultural stop and have enough time, choose Wuhou Shrine Museum for its Three Kingdoms associations; check its official booking channel first and give the visit its own travel time.

Avoid adding Leshan or a second panda centre to this relaxed city day. They require a different plan. For an easy evening, have dinner before deciding whether you still want the river walk.

03

Day two morning: Du Fu’s garden retreat

Visit Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum in western Chengdu. Use the museum map to link the memorial halls, cottage reconstruction and garden paths. Look for how doorways frame the greenery, then read a little of Du Fu’s poetry rather than hurrying from one photo spot to the next.

Allow a proper lunch break and travel time before heading back towards the centre. The cottage is a separate ticketed visit; check current admission through the museum.

04

Day two afternoon: make time for tea

We recommend Heming Teahouse in People’s Park for a seated tea break. Bamboo chairs and covered tea cups make this a good pause after a garden morning. Order a tea you would enjoy, ask about the serving and refills, and leave enough time to sit rather than treating it as a takeaway stop.

If it is busy or raining, shorten the park walk and make a comfortable indoor meal your priority. This afternoon is deliberately light; the tea stop works better without another distant attraction waiting at the end.

05

An optional evening beside Anshun Bridge

After a meal and rest, head to the public riverbank near Anshun Bridge. Look across the water towards the covered bridge and its reflections. You can enjoy the exterior view without booking a restaurant on the bridge or adding a boat trip. Keep the walk short in wet weather and save your return route before leaving.

06

A museum to save for another visit

Checked 21 October 2026: Jinsha Site Museum is closed in all areas for upgrades scheduled from 5 December 2025 through 30 April 2027. Its ancient Shu archaeology makes it worth considering on a later visit, but it is not an available stop now. Choose Du Fu Thatched Cottage instead for a different view of Chengdu’s cultural history. Packtricia will check for reopening; always check the museum before travelling.
