Blue twin towers of Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos overlooking Largo do Pelourinho
Salvador · Historic centre walk

Pelourinho, Carnival stories and a Bahian lunch

Take a compact loop through Pelourinho rather than racing from one church door to another. Pair its squares with Carnival exhibits and a lunch that helps you understand Bahian food.

01

Begin with the square in the photograph

Start at Largo do Pelourinho. The blue twin towers belong to Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos. Look at how the church faces the steep square, then take your time with the surrounding façades. This is a living religious place: ask about visiting access and avoid interrupting worship.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Follow the streets towards Terreiro de Jesus

Continue through the historic core to Terreiro de Jesus and the cathedral area. The walking is short in distance but includes uneven stone and slopes. Use comfortable shoes, carry water and stop in shade before continuing to Largo do Cruzeiro de São Francisco.

At our 10 October 2026 review, the Church and Convent of São Francisco was closed for restoration. Its richly decorated interior remains worth knowing about, but it is not an available stop on this route. Packtricia will check for reopening; always check the venue before travelling. The restoration programme extends across several phases, which does not establish a visitor reopening date.

For an optional booked version, compare the Historic Salvador walking tour. Confirm the route’s alternative to the closed São Francisco church before booking. A guide does not reopen the church or imply included food, transport or other church tickets. Check the meeting point and language for your selected date.

03

Choose an available museum instead

We recommend Casa do Carnaval for a change from architectural sightseeing. Its costumes, instruments and audiovisual displays explain the people and rhythms behind the street celebration. It is a museum visit, not a live Carnival parade; check the current admission and visiting arrangements.

04

Make lunch part of the outing

Return towards the square for Restaurante Escola Senac Pelourinho. We recommend the restaurant-school complex because it brings regional cooking into the route. Ask what is on the day’s menu and sample small portions before returning for favourites; confirm service and any reservation requirements. The associated gastronomy museum and café are separate spaces, so ask which are open.

05

Keep the shorter version useful

For a shorter visit, keep Largo do Pelourinho, the historic streets and lunch, choosing one indoor stop. In prolonged rain, favour Casa do Carnaval and the gastronomy complex rather than hurrying over slippery paving. Do not reserve an old itinerary that promises entry to the closed São Francisco church.

Colourful Pelourinho façades with São Francisco’s towers at the end of the street

A first weekend in Salvador

Spend one day with the historic centre and a second with Barra’s maritime history and shore. This plan leaves room for lunch and makes Itapuã an alternative rather than a hurried extra.

Elevador Lacerda linking Salvador’s upper city with the port below

Lacerda bay views and Mercado Modelo

This route connects a bay overlook with the craft market in Comércio. The lift solves a change in height; the best view comes before you enter its cabin.

Black-and-white Farol da Barra above the walls of Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra

Barra lighthouse, the nautical museum and the shore

Use Barra for an unhurried mix of maritime history and sea views. The lighthouse grounds and Porto da Barra beach suit different parts of the day; swimming is optional.

Red-and-white Farol de Itapuã beside its sandy beach and rocky shore

Itapuã lighthouse and the Vinicius memorial

Give Itapuã its own outing. Its red-and-white lighthouse and the former home of Vinicius de Moraes make a compact coastal plan, with a proper meal instead of a rushed cross-city checklist.

Florianópolis waterfront and the modern bridges connecting island and mainland

A first weekend in Florianópolis

Spend one day in the historic centre and another around Barra da Lagoa. Two well-chosen districts leave room for meals, museums and island traffic, without pretending you can see every beach in a weekend.

Historic buildings around Marco Zero seen across the Recife waterfront

A first weekend in Recife

Use the first day for Recife Antigo and the second for a deliberate art outing in Várzea. The harbour sculpture park is an optional crossing, not a substitute for either inland Brennand collection.
