Colourful Pelourinho façades with São Francisco’s towers at the end of the street
Salvador · Weekend guide

A first weekend in Salvador

Spend one day with the historic centre and a second with Barra’s maritime history and shore. This plan leaves room for lunch and makes Itapuã an alternative rather than a hurried extra.

01

Day one morning: a compact historic loop

Start at Largo do Pelourinho, then walk towards Terreiro de Jesus and Largo do Cruzeiro de São Francisco. Notice the different church façades and the slopes between the squares. São Francisco was closed for restoration at our 10 October 2026 review; keep it as a context stop outside any barriers. Packtricia will check for reopening, but always check the venue before travelling.

02

Day one lunch and afternoon: food, music or the market

Take a proper lunch break at the Senac Pelourinho restaurant-school complex, checking the day’s service. Afterwards choose Casa do Carnaval for the story behind the city’s music and celebrations, or the Praça Municipal overlook followed by Elevador Lacerda and Mercado Modelo. These are alternatives: doing both adds more walking and leaves less time to look around.

03

Day two morning: Barra’s maritime setting

Go to Farol da Barra and choose a visit to the nautical museum after checking admission. Keep time for the collection rather than photographing the tower and leaving. If you prefer art, choose one of the nearby fort art spaces instead of assuming every collection is part of a lighthouse ticket.

04

Day two afternoon: a shorter coastal finish

Continue towards Porto da Barra for a relaxed shore break. Swimming is optional and depends on current local conditions. Leave a meal break between the museum and outdoor time; carry water, sun protection and a dry layer if you plan to swim. Shorten the coast walk when rain or surf makes it uncomfortable.

05

Swap the second day for Itapuã

For a different pace, replace Barra with Itapuã’s lighthouse, the Vinicius de Moraes memorial and lunch at Casa Di Vina. Book the meal if needed and allow for the journey. This is a replacement day, not a quick stop after Barra. The free memorial and paid restaurant are separate choices.

06

Keep a rain and shorter-stay plan

With prolonged rain, keep Casa do Carnaval and a sheltered meal on the historic day, and choose an available indoor collection for the other day. With just one day, choose the historic loop plus one afternoon option. Pack shoes that grip uneven paving and a small zipped bag; avoid carrying a beach kit if you have chosen an indoor cultural day.

Lacerda bay views and Mercado Modelo

This route connects a bay overlook with the craft market in Comércio. The lift solves a change in height; the best view comes before you enter its cabin.

Blue twin towers of Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos overlooking Largo do Pelourinho

Pelourinho, Carnival stories and a Bahian lunch

Take a compact loop through Pelourinho rather than racing from one church door to another. Pair its squares with Carnival exhibits and a lunch that helps you understand Bahian food.

Black-and-white Farol da Barra above the walls of Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra

Barra lighthouse, the nautical museum and the shore

Use Barra for an unhurried mix of maritime history and sea views. The lighthouse grounds and Porto da Barra beach suit different parts of the day; swimming is optional.

Red-and-white Farol de Itapuã beside its sandy beach and rocky shore

Itapuã lighthouse and the Vinicius memorial

Give Itapuã its own outing. Its red-and-white lighthouse and the former home of Vinicius de Moraes make a compact coastal plan, with a proper meal instead of a rushed cross-city checklist.

Florianópolis waterfront and the modern bridges connecting island and mainland

A first weekend in Florianópolis

Spend one day in the historic centre and another around Barra da Lagoa. Two well-chosen districts leave room for meals, museums and island traffic, without pretending you can see every beach in a weekend.

Historic buildings around Marco Zero seen across the Recife waterfront

A first weekend in Recife

Use the first day for Recife Antigo and the second for a deliberate art outing in Várzea. The harbour sculpture park is an optional crossing, not a substitute for either inland Brennand collection.
