A first look at İzmir

Begin at Konak Square, continue into Kemeraltı and pause around Kızlarağası Hanı before visiting the Agora. Meşhur Hisarönü Şambalicisi offers a specific sweet stop: semolina şambali, with optional kaymak and cinnamon. Save another morning for boyoz at Alsancak Dostlar Fırını and a Kordon walk. A public ferry to Karşıyaka gives a different view of the gulf; check the return sailing before leaving. The Historic Elevator is an optional separate Karataş outing rather than an extra stop between the market and Alsancak.

Choosing a season

The best-season badge suggests months for general sightseeing, using the typical daytime temperatures and rainfall in our monthly guides. Beach holidays, festivals, winter sports and northern lights trips may suit different dates.

Climate methodology

Editorial planning bands centred on rounded average daily maximum and minimum temperatures, allowing two degrees either side. MGM’s İzmir table covers observations from 1938–2025, checked 24 October 2026; these are long-period averages, not specifically 1991–2020 normals, extremes or a forecast. Rain wording summarises the seasonal pattern without predicting your dates. Check the forecast before departure.

Transport guide

Getting around İzmir

Use the municipal İzmirim Kart app for stop, route and schedule information, balance checks and top-ups. The official store page also describes digital-card and QR boarding features across the municipal network; registration, phone and payment setup are separate from finding a route. Keep a physical İzmirim Kart as a practical option if the digital setup does not work for you. The municipality lists sales and loading points at major metro stations and ferry piers, including Konak and Karşıyaka. Load a balance and validate it at the bus reader or station/pier gate; a route search is not a ticket. Check the current fare rules for the service you use, especially İZBAN and airport travel, rather than assuming every transfer has the same conditions. For the gulf, use İZDENİZ’s day-and-pier departure search and current notices: Konak, Alsancak, Karşıyaka and Bostanlı are different terminals, and routes may call at intermediate piers. City cards do not imply coverage of intercity coaches, private tours or every seasonal excursion.

Check the operator’s current service notices and ticket instructions before travelling.
