A first weekend in Hanoi: lake, old lanes and historic courtyards

Pair Hoàn Kiếm Lake and the Old Quarter with a separate day for the Temple of Literature and Thang Long Imperial Citadel, leaving time for a meal and a cool-down.

01

Day one: Hoàn Kiếm Lake and the Old Quarter

Begin at Hoàn Kiếm Lake and walk around the water before the lanes get busier. Visit Ngọc Sơn Temple if it is open and you want an indoor history stop; check its current entry and bridge access. Continue into the Old Quarter along Hàng Đào and Hàng Ngang, choosing a café or market meal rather than trying to cover every lane.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Take a food break in a real neighbourhood

For bún chả, Bún Chả Đắc Kim is a long-running Old Quarter address listed by local food guides; service details can change, so confirm before making a special trip. Keep the afternoon compact, with a rest before another short lakefront walk.

03

Day two: literature and the imperial citadel

Start at the Temple of Literature, where the courtyards, steles and pavilions make a focused morning visit. Its official site lists daytime opening and a separate evening programme on selected days; check the current schedule and ticket before going. Continue by taxi or bus to the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long for the archaeological and dynastic layers; it has a separate admission and official visitor hours.

04

Choose one afternoon area

If energy and weather allow, walk around Trúc Bạch Lake and try phở cuốn around Ngũ Xã, a useful contrast to the Old Quarter’s grilled dishes. Otherwise return to a café near your hotel and leave the rest unplanned; the two historic sites already make a full day.

05

Rain, heat and restricted rail corridor

Move outdoor walks to early morning or late afternoon and use a museum or long café break at midday. As of 24 October 2026, Hanoi police describe the Train Street rail-safety corridor as too narrow for visitor businesses and ask travel companies not to promote train-side café activities. Do not enter the track area or make it a required stop; choose Hoàn Kiếm Lake or Trúc Bạch instead, and recheck local notices before travel.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.
