A first look at Hanoi

Hanoi rewards short, purposeful walks. Start around Hoàn Kiếm Lake and the Old Quarter, where lanes, markets and cafés sit close together; use a separate outing for the Temple of Literature and the Imperial Citadel, then head to West Lake for Tran Quoc Pagoda and Trúc Bạch. The metro serves selected corridors while buses and taxis fill the gaps. Heat, rain and dense traffic change walking conditions, so check service and visitor notices and cross only at controlled points.

Transport guide

Getting around Hanoi

Hanoi Metro’s English site shows Line 2A (Cat Linh–Ha Dong) and the operating elevated section of Line 3.1 (Nhon–Cau Giay); both run daily, with official hours and service notices published by the operator. The Metro app’s registration and mobile ticket steps may require a Vietnamese chip-enabled identity card, so visitors should check eligibility and buy eligible tickets at a station counter when needed. Metro tickets cover metro journeys only. iHanoi provides bus route, stop and fare information but requires account registration; use it for planning only and confirm the route and ticket with the bus operator before boarding. Citymapper’s Hanoi coverage was not confirmed, so use official network information and a map for walking legs.

Check the operator’s current service notices and ticket instructions before travelling.

Keep your passport secure in crowded streets and note that emergency calls may be answered in Vietnamese. Recheck entry and safety advice for your own route before departure.
