Sunset reflections at the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia

Things people forget when visiting Valencia

Valencia can combine an old-town morning, a long park walk and a coastal detour. Prepare for the actual mix you want: a few small choices about shoes, weather and belongings can make those changes of setting much easier.

01

The distance through the Turia Gardens

The gardens extend for about nine kilometres, so a park walk can grow into a substantial outing. Choose the section you want rather than assuming you need the whole route, and mark an easy way out if you prefer to shorten it.

For a first Turia outing, choose either a shorter central section or the approach to the City of Arts and Sciences. Mark an exit near your lunch stop or transport connection; the attractive green route can otherwise draw you farther than you meant to walk.

02

Sun protection beyond the beach

The City of Arts and Sciences and open walking routes can involve plenty of time outside. Keep a hat and sun protection accessible during the city day too, instead of packing them only for a possible swim.

03

A jacket for the coastal end of the day

Check the evening forecast if your route finishes by the sea. A thin layer can be useful after a warmer inland walk, and is easier to bring than returning to your room just to change.

04

Separate bookings within a large complex

Read the inclusions for each attraction you want to enter at the City of Arts and Sciences. Walking around the architecture is different from having admission to the experiences inside; make the distinction before organising your day.

At the City of Arts and Sciences, distinguish a Science Museum visit, an Oceanogràfic visit and a Hemisfèric screening. Select the experience you actually want and check its ticket details rather than buying a package because the buildings look close together.

05

A dry plan after a beach stop

For swimming, bring a contained change and somewhere to put damp items. Decide how valuables will remain attended. If the day only involves a coastal meal or walk, you can leave the swim kit behind.

06

A rain alternative in autumn

Do not pack solely for sunshine, especially when the forecast shows wet spells. Keep a compact rain layer and an indoor option ready, and follow current local weather notices when deciding on park or coastal routes.

For a wet day, consider La Lonja or an available museum admission instead of a long beach walk. For a city-and-coast day, keep the Central Market and cathedral area as a compact morning, then travel to Las Arenas or Malvarrosa rather than adding the entire park.
