Begin at the Highland Gate
Use the Highland Gate, also called the Upland Gate, as a clear starting point on the western edge of the Main Town. Continue towards the Golden Gate rather than beginning in an unnamed shopping street. The change from the former defensive approach to the enclosed street ahead helps make sense of the route. Pause where you can see the gateways without blocking their passages. The museum spaces in this area are separate visitor choices, not part of simply following the public street.
For a guided or bookable alternative, consider this private Gdańsk Old Town walking tour for a guided Royal Route introduction. Confirm language and the Upland Gate meeting point. St Mary’s entry is an optional extra; Crane, Amber Museum and European Solidarity Centre admission are not established inclusions.
Follow Długa towards the Town Hall tower
Walk along Długa and notice how the narrow frontages and taller tower organise the view. Look back occasionally to see the gate framing the street behind you. There is no need to enter each historic building to appreciate the sequence. If you want a particular room or collection, check the Museum of Gdańsk branch information before building it into the walk. A ticket for one branch should not be assumed to cover every interior along the route.
Slow down at Długi Targ
When the street broadens into Długi Targ, give Neptune’s Fountain and the Artus Court façade their own pause. The Town Hall tower remains a useful orientation point behind you. Move around the square to see the buildings from different angles, leaving room for people who are passing through. This section makes a satisfying shorter walk on its own. A tower climb is optional and should depend on current admission and your comfort with steps, rather than being a required finish.
Finish through the Green Gate
Continue towards the Green Gate and pass through to the Motława waterfront. The article photograph looks back through one of its arches towards Długi Targ and the Town Hall, giving you a useful return view to look for. Stay clear of the flow through the passage when stopping for a picture. Once at the water, choose a short look across the river or a longer walk towards the Crane; the Royal Route does not require a boat trip.
Plan a meal detour instead of an accidental extension
If you want a meal, Mandu at Elżbietańska 4/8 is a deliberate northward detour, not a restaurant on Długa. Its operator lists traditional boiled dumplings with meat as well as potato and curd cheese, with topping choices that matter for vegetarians. Check the actual menu and ingredients when ordering. This stop fits best when you want to continue towards the Old Town or canal afterwards. Allow time for the detour and service rather than treating lunch as a hurried extra.
Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.
Choose the length that suits the weather
On a wet or tiring day, keep the gate-to-market portion and save the river extension for later. Cobbles and smooth paving need shoes with dependable grip, while open waterfront stops benefit from a removable layer. If an interior is important, verify its date and entrance before leaving the route to seek shelter. Keep church visits subject to worship and signs. The outdoor sequence remains useful when a room is unavailable, and you can finish at the Green Gate without adding a second district.
