Gdańsk’s Radunia Canal: the Great Mill, amber and a pierogi stop

Use the Radunia Canal and Great Mill to explore the Old Town north of the Royal Route. Choose the Amber Museum for an indoor extension, then leave time for a nearby, researched dumpling meal.

01

Begin with the canal rather than the seafront

Make the Radunia Canal your first anchor for this outing. It belongs to a different setting from the broad Motława waterfront: here the water connects to the Great Mill and the surrounding Old Town streets. Walk only on the available public paths and pause where you can look without blocking a crossing. The half-timbered millers’ guild house pictured beside the canal is an exterior landmark, not the Amber Museum entrance. Keeping those identities separate avoids an unnecessary search for a museum door.

02

Look for the Great Mill and St Catherine’s setting

Continue towards the Great Mill and use St Catherine’s Church tower to orient yourself among the surrounding streets. The mill’s large brick form gives the water route a clear destination. There is enough here for a short exterior walk without adding a church climb. Religious interiors and any tower attraction have their own visitor arrangements, so they remain optional. Give the buildings a look from more than one side, then choose whether the museum will improve the outing.

03

Choose amber for a specific indoor interest

The Amber Museum is now in the Great Mill at Wielkie Młyny 16, rather than its former gate-complex location. Its displays explore the material and the objects made from it, giving the visit a focus beyond shopping for jewellery. Look for the contrast between amber specimens and worked pieces instead of treating every display as a souvenir recommendation. This museum has its own admission; a maritime ticket bought for the Crane does not establish entry here. Confirm the selected branch when buying.

04

Check the weekly closure and actual entrance

The Amber Museum’s current calendar, reviewed on 14 October 2026, lists Tuesday closure and final entry an hour before closing. Holiday exceptions also matter. Packtricia will recheck these recorded restrictions; visitors should confirm the operator before travel. If it is closed, keep the canal and Great Mill exteriors and move the collection visit to another day. For mobility access, the operator identifies the courtyard approach from Na Piaskach, which differs from the main visitor entrance; confirm the arrangement for your own needs.

05

Make Mandu the named meal anchor

Mandu on Elżbietańska at number 4/8 is a useful meal choice for this northern central-city outing. Select the Śródmieście branch, since the same operator has restaurants elsewhere in the Tricity. Its menu includes potato-and-curd-cheese pierogi and meat fillings, giving you a concrete dish to consider. Ask about the topping: the standard onion preparation includes bacon, while a vegetarian version is listed. Check allergies and current service directly and allow time for a table rather than treating the meal as guaranteed.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

06

Keep the canal walk a complete shorter outing

You can stop after the canal, mill exteriors and meal without continuing all the way to ECS or returning to every Main Town sight. That makes the walk practical when energy or weather is limited. Wet paving beside water needs dependable shoes, and a hooded shell is useful between stops. An indoor museum visit should fit its actual entry window. Leave church visits and the longer Solidarity extension for a separately planned outing, keeping this route centred on water, the mill and amber.
