Bou Inania and Bab Boujloud: a short first walk in Fès

Keep your first Fès outing close to the western medina entrance. Bab Boujloud, Talaa Kebira and Bou Inania form a clear sequence, with carved architectural detail and a nearby café break.

01

Use the gate as your meeting point

Start at Bab Boujloud. Look at its coloured tile decoration before heading into Talaa Kebira towards Bou Inania Madrasa. Save the gate on your map as a return anchor; this is a short introductory walk, so there is no need to continue all the way across the medina.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Let the decoration set the pace

At Bou Inania, look from the lower tilework to the carved plaster and wooden details above. The courtyard brings these materials together, while the minaret helps you recognise the building from nearby lanes. Stay on the open visitor route and keep bags away from delicate surfaces.

The madrasa has a religious role as well as an architectural one. Check access at the entrance and respect barriers or prayer restrictions. Do not treat a courtyard admission as access to adjoining worship areas, and do not confuse this Bou Inania with the madrasa of the same name in Meknès.

03

Notice the water-clock frontage

Across from the madrasa, look for Dar al-Magana, the historic water-clock frontage. It works as a brief exterior stop rather than another interior visit. Look up at the surviving architectural features without blocking the narrow thoroughfare; check with a guide if you want the mechanism’s history explained.

04

Make Café Clock the break

We recommend Café Clock for a meal near this route. Its Moroccan menu and camel burger give you a concrete lunch option, with current dishes listed on its own website. Check before ordering if you have dietary requirements. The café also advertises cultural activities, but reserve or confirm the particular session separately.

05

Finish early or extend deliberately

Return to Bab Boujloud for a simple finish. If you want to continue towards Nejjarine, save it as a separate leg with enough energy and daylight for the return. Carry water and sun protection in warm weather; a jumper and jacket are useful for cold starts in winter. If the madrasa is unavailable, the gate, water-clock exterior and café still make a manageable short outing.

For help navigating the medina, Compare the guided Fès medina walk. This guided walk includes artisan-workshop stops and is an alternative to navigating the medina independently. Confirm the monuments entered, separate admission charges, meals and meeting point before booking. Leave extra time: a recent guest reported the walk running longer than advertised. Check your selected language and mobility requirements.

Chouara Tannery: a considerate viewpoint visit in Fès

Chouara is a working tannery, seen from terraces above the vats. Approach it as an optional short visit, with clear expectations about shop access, stairs and photography, then return through the eastern medina at your own pace.
