Naples from Vomero: castle view or San Martino collection?

Choose one main hilltop visit and plan the transport around it. Castel Sant’Elmo and San Martino are neighbours with different collections and admissions; the climb is not an extra stop between two old-town bookings.

01

Arrange the ascent before setting out

Use ANM’s current metro or funicular information for the route towards Vomero. Check service notices and save the return route. A steep walk can be an intentional choice, but do not treat the map’s shortest line as the easiest connection for everyone.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Choose the castle for the city’s shape

At Castel Sant’Elmo, the fortress setting helps you read the dense old centre, bay and surrounding hills. Confirm the current terrace and room access before buying. Good visibility makes this a different outing from a clouded or wet day.

03

Choose San Martino for another subject

The Certosa and Museum of San Martino offers monastic architecture, art and displays including the nativity collection. Make this the main visit if those subjects interest you. Check which sections are available instead of assuming every named department is open on the day.

04

Keep tickets and access separate

The two complexes have different entrances and visitor arrangements. Consult the national Vomero museums’ current information and any room notices before planning both. If mobility or heights matter, ask about the specific route rather than relying on a general label such as accessible museum.

05

Return with enough time to eat

Leave room for the descent and a meal rather than another cross-city reservation. On a poor-visibility day, a confirmed San Martino interior may suit better than a panorama-led castle visit. If hill transport is disrupted, choose an operating city-centre museum and move this outing to another day.

A first weekend in Naples

Keep the weekend in Naples: a booked old-town visit, time for pizza, and a choice between the waterfront and hill museums. Pompeii and island trips deserve days of their own.

Piazza del Plebiscito and San Francesco di Paola in Naples

Naples waterfront: Plebiscito, Santa Lucia and Castel dell’Ovo

Keep this route on available public streets, with the castle as an exterior landmark. Castel dell’Ovo is still worth naming, but its closed interior should not be the required endpoint of your walk.

Naples: Spaccanapoli and a booked Sansevero visit

Let the Sansevero slot anchor a short old-town walk. The Veiled Christ deserves concentrated looking, while Spaccanapoli’s squares and church settings give you useful stops outside the museum.

Naples: Via dei Tribunali pizza and craft streets

Use one pizzeria as the main food stop, then explore nearby squares and craft streets. A good pizza outing needs time to eat and an honest queue plan, rather than a promise that every famous venue has instant seating.

A first weekend in Bologna

Keep the first day around the civic squares and food shops, then choose San Luca or a slower museum day. The closed Asinelli climb should not determine whether the weekend feels complete.
