Jakarta’s modern skyline seen above the dense city
Jakarta · Weekend itinerary

A first weekend in Jakarta: old Batavia, Monas and a food-filled evening

Use one day for Kota Tua and Glodok, then cross the city the next day for Monas, the civic centre and an evening meal.

01

Saturday morning: Fatahillah Square and Kota Tua

Start at Fatahillah Square while the open plaza is cooler. The former city hall now houses the Jakarta History Museum; nearby, the Wayang Museum and Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics make separate interior stops. Check each museum’s current hours and ticket rules before travelling.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Lunch and an easy Glodok extension

Walk from the square toward Glodok, Jakarta’s Chinatown district, and browse Petak Sembilan’s market lanes. Food writers map a Kota Tua-to-Glodok tasting walk around Gloria Alley and Pantjoran; choose one or two stops, ask about ingredients and current opening, and carry small cash for stalls. Kopi Es Tak Kie is a long-running coffee stop cited by local guides.

03

Sunday morning: Merdeka Square and Monas

Go early to Merdeka Square and Monas. The monument’s museum and observation deck add context to the independence memorial; official visitor guidance currently lists Monday closure, so make this a Sunday or another open day and recheck the latest calendar.

04

Sunday later: Istiqlal, the Cathedral and dinner

The large Istiqlal Mosque and Jakarta Cathedral face one another across the central district. Dress respectfully and confirm visitor access; Istiqlal’s official visitor information should guide non-worship visits. Leave time to rest before dinner rather than crossing town at rush hour.

05

A guided option for a short first visit

If you would rather connect the districts by car with a guide, the private half-day tour offers hotel pickup in listed Jakarta areas and covers Merdeka Square, Monas, Istiqlal, the Cathedral, Batavia and Sunda Kelapa. It lasts about four and a half hours; the route includes several short visits, Monas is closed Mondays, and some areas may not suit visitors with mobility impairments. Check which entrance tickets are included and confirm the selected date before booking.

For a guided alternative, compare Jakarta private half-day highlights tour; check date-specific availability and the Monday closure before booking.
