Destination guide

A first look at Savannakhet

Start around Saint Theresa’s Church and Talat Yen Plaza, where the old street grid links shopfronts, murals and cinema façades. Continue to Vat Xaiyaphoume for its decorated temple buildings and naga stair guardians, then leave time for the Mekong promenade. Kín Cafe’s 1988 near the temple is a useful coffee pause in an adapted old building. Laochaleun Square adds a food-stall stop later in the day. Keep That Ing Hang and Beung Va as a separate return-transport outing rather than squeezing them into the walk. Museum interiors need a current access check.

Transport guide

Getting around Savannakhet

Walk the compact old-town grid between the church, temple and Mekong, watching for traffic and uneven or missing pavement. The tourism office’s mobile website supplies a walking map and local tuk-tuk guidance; it is a planning resource, not a ticketing app. Tuk-tuk pickup points include the old immigration office by the Mekong, the bus station and Savanxay Market. Agree the destination, stops, waiting time, fare and return before leaving for That Ing Hang or Beung Va. Download the map before setting out. The Services page links provincial bus and songthaew tables, but the inspected songthaew PDF is dated January 2024: confirm departures and fares locally rather than treating it as a live timetable. No current native city-bus planning, ticket purchase or activation app was verified; intercity booking does not establish city-bus coverage.

Check the operator’s current service notices and ticket instructions before travelling.
