A first look at Amman

Begin at the Citadel’s Temple of Hercules and Umayyad Palace, then make a separate stop at the Roman Theatre and Odeon below. Downtown, Hashem’s hummus and falafel fit a meal before kunafa at Habibah. Leave another outing for King Abdullah I Mosque’s blue dome and Darat al Funun in Jabal al-Weibdeh; its galleries and garden terraces reward a slower visit. Check current travel advice and site access before fixing your plans.

Choosing a season

The best-season badge suggests months for general sightseeing, using the typical daytime temperatures and rainfall in our monthly guides. Beach holidays, festivals, winter sports and northern lights trips may suit different dates.

Climate methodology

WMO World Weather Information Service publishes Jordan Meteorological Department climate values for Amman: October mean daily maximum 27.1°C, mean daily minimum 13.8°C and mean monthly rain 6.6mm. The accessed table does not state its averaging period or rain-day threshold; neither is inferred. Packing bands round the temperature values and add ±2°C as a practical guide, not a forecast range or extremes. Amman’s elevated climate does not describe the Dead Sea, Aqaba or desert camps; check actual dates and onward forecasts.

Transport guide

Getting around Amman

Use the official Vision City Bus website, previously branded Amman Bus, for the route network, fare tables, card outlets and app downloads. The Vision City Bus Android app documents journey planning, live arrivals, prepaid-card balance checks and credit-card top-ups; travellers without a prepaid card can buy a one-time QR ticket. Set up the account and test payment before you reach the stop. Buy and load a physical card at an authorised outlet if you prefer that option; do not expect cash payment or card sales from the driver. Scan the valid QR ticket or tap the loaded card at the validator when boarding. The operator also advertises bank-card payment, but check the current method on your particular service rather than relying on it as your only option. Planning a route does not buy or activate a ticket. Confirm the correct direction, last service and stop with the operator, particularly if the app fails to load a route. This guidance concerns the operator’s Amman city and BRT services; airport coaches, JETT intercity trips and other operators have separate arrangements. Steep neighbourhood streets make a licensed taxi a useful alternative for the return uphill.

Check the operator’s current service notices and ticket instructions before travelling.

Entry information for Jordan

Check Jordan’s official visa guidance for your nationality and border crossing, and confirm requirements with the relevant Jordanian mission before travel. Do not assume visa-on-arrival or Jordan Pass eligibility applies to every passport. Review your own government’s live Jordan advice and your insurance before committing to dates: regional security disruption and airspace changes can affect flights and onward plans.
