A first look at San José

Start at Mercado Central for Soda Tala’s rice-and-bean breakfast, then follow Avenida Central towards the National Theatre and Plaza de la Cultura. Book the theatre’s own guided visit if you want to see its interiors; a city walk’s lobby stop is a different experience. Continue east for the National Museum in the former Bellavista barracks and a look at Castillo Azul from the public street. Choose one museum for a relaxed afternoon rather than racing through every collection. On a second day, combine Parque Morazán and Parque España with the historic houses of Barrio Amón, then pause at Casa Julieta for gallo pinto or a casado. The National Museum closes Mondays; put the neighbourhood walk on that day instead. Market opening information differs between the municipality and local guides, so confirm your chosen stall’s service and use Saturday rather than depending on Sunday breakfast.

San José’s elevated Central Valley setting brings mild days and cooler evenings throughout the year. What this means for packing

Prioritise grippy shoes and a rain shell for this very wet part of the year; avoid a rigid afternoon walking schedule. This example is a starting point. Download Packtricia for a more detailed personal list and quantities tailored to your actual dates, trip length, weather, preferences, luggage and plans.

Choosing a season

The best-season badge suggests months for general sightseeing, using the typical daytime temperatures and rainfall in our monthly guides. Beach holidays, festivals, winter sports and northern lights trips may suit different dates.

Climate methodology

Packing bands are about 2°C either side of rounded WMO San José mean daily maximum (25.4°C) and minimum (16.4°C). Published monthly precipitation is 326 mm. WMO identifies older, different periods: temperatures 1961–1982 and precipitation 1888–1997. These are broad seasonal references, not current normals or a forecast. Costa Rica Tourism’s current Central Valley dry/green-season guidance supports the seasonal packing advice. Airport, coast and volcano conditions differ; check the actual forecast before travel.

Transport guide

Getting around San José

Walk the compact central sights in daylight and use Moovit to compare bus routes, stops and INCOFER train journeys in the San José metropolitan area. Its mobile website is a useful fallback to the app; confirm the exact departure stop and operator timetable, since routes use different terminals. Moovit is a planner here, not a bus reservation or ticket. Carry small colón notes for buses and ask the operator about payment before boarding; do not assume app ticketing or contactless acceptance across the network. Transvi publishes its Calle Blancos–San José schedules directly. INCOFER’s San José–Heredia–Alajuela route lists regular Monday-to-Friday service; check its actual calendar before planning a weekend train outing. Buy or pay for the selected service through its operator, independently of the planner. Allow extra time for traffic when connecting to the airport, which is outside central San José; a downtown walking time is not an airport transfer estimate.

Check the operator’s current service notices and ticket instructions before travelling.
