A first look at Xi’an

Keep the city wall, towers and a paomo meal together for an old-town day. Give the Terracotta Army its own outing with travel and lunch time. Visit the pagoda district separately rather than squeezing every major sight into one afternoon. Checked 21 October 2026: the Bell Tower indoor hall was closed for renovation scheduled through 15 November; the Drum Tower hall is scheduled to close 1–30 November. The museum says the platforms remain open. Choose exterior views as the alternative. Packtricia will check reopening; confirm with the museum before travelling.

What this means for packing

October is a good month for layers: long trousers and a light jacket work for tower views, while a sweater helps after sunset. Keep the umbrella handy for autumn rain.

Choosing a season

The best-season badge suggests months for general sightseeing, using the typical daytime temperatures and rainfall in our monthly guides. Beach holidays, festivals, winter sports and northern lights trips may suit different dates.

Climate methodology

Planning bands rounded to roughly 2°C either side of the WMO/CMA Xi’an mean daily maximum (19.3°C) and minimum (9.8°C). Mean monthly precipitation: 66 mm.
