A first weekend in Zürich: old-town views, church art and a lake-side pause

Plan two flexible Zürich days with a concrete vegetarian meal, a locally recommended public garden and careful church, tower and boat choices.

01

Day one: walk from the station into the older town

Begin at Zürich Hauptbahnhof and follow the old-town route towards Lindenhof. The raised square gives you a useful view of the Limmat, church towers and streets before you choose a closer look. Leave time for the approach and a pause rather than treating the viewpoint as a quick photograph between shops.

Continue down towards Schipfe, the riverside artisan quarter beneath Lindenhof. Its smaller workshops and narrow lanes add a different scale to the city. Browse during actual shop opening hours and use public streets; the historical setting does not make every courtyard or doorway a visitor attraction.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

For a guided introduction, compare the Zürich old-town walking tour. Confirm the actual language and meeting point at the main station. Church interiors and towers remain separate; the discounted Zürich Card option requires an existing valid card rather than supplying a new pass.

02

Give lunch a definite place

Haus Hiltl at Sihlstrasse 28 offers a specific vegetarian meal close to the central streets. The operator distinguishes its table-service restaurant from the buffet, so decide whether you want an unhurried seated meal or to choose your own plate. Ask about ingredients and the current service format if dietary needs matter.

This works as a deliberate break between the river walk and another outing. Do not assume a reservation at Haus Hiltl belongs to a different Hiltl branch or rooftop venue. Allow time to enjoy the food before crossing back towards the old town rather than making lunch an anonymous gap between sights.

03

Day one afternoon: choose one church visit carefully

Cross towards Grossmünster if church history interests you. The canton’s restoration project changes the exterior appearance, and the parish has current opening exceptions. When checked on 16 October 2026, Karlsturm was closed Monday–Thursday and available Friday–Sunday subject to other restrictions. The church and tower are separate access decisions.

Alternatively, Fraumünster offers stained glass by Chagall and Giacometti, with its own visitor admission and service calendar. Choose the interior you most want to see rather than assuming a guided street walk or general city ticket admits you everywhere. The public riverbank remains an alternative when an interior is unavailable.

04

Day two: add a smaller garden discovery

Local contributor Isabelle Thürlemann highlights Rechberg Park as a worthwhile quieter stop. Zurich Tourism confirms the public Baroque garden between the university and Kunsthaus, with terraces and a night closure. It is a real public place to sit and look at the garden’s layout, not permission to enter the surrounding institutional buildings.

Treat it as an optional uphill outing from the older streets. In poor weather or when steps do not suit your group, stay with a shorter town route and an open café or restaurant. A locally recommended corner works best when it adds something you enjoy, not another obligation on a checklist.

05

Finish beside the water, with a boat only if it fits

Head towards Bürkliplatz for the lake outlet and choose a manageable promenade section. A lake-side pause makes a different finish from the streets and church rooms. Bring a removable layer for slower time beside open water, and keep the return to your station or accommodation in the plan.

If you want a boat, choose the actual river or lake service and check its current departure, disruption notice and ticket. Seasonal Limmat cruises are not the same as longer scheduled lake journeys. Do not attach a summer sailing photograph or a broad transport pass to an assumed winter departure.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.
