Sandstone arcades and buildings around the Zytglogge in Bern’s old town

Bern’s old town on foot: arcades, fountains and a quieter terrace

Follow Bern’s covered streets from the Zytglogge to the Justice fountain, then turn towards Münsterplatz for a river-facing pause and an optional Einstein House visit.

01

Use the Zytglogge as your western anchor

Begin at the Zytglogge and turn east into Kramgasse. The clock makes an easy meeting landmark, but this walk is about the streets beyond it: sandstone facades, the changing rhythm of the arcades and the fountain columns standing in the public space. Keep a map handy for the short turns rather than following a rigid minute-by-minute schedule.

The arcades are useful in rain, but they are also entrances to businesses and homes. Leave room for other walkers and avoid stopping a group across an entire passage. Covered sections do not mean the whole route is step-free or dry; wear shoes that cope with wet stone and take a rain layer for crossings between them.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Look at the figures rather than collecting fountain photographs

Continue through Kramgasse towards Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen, the Justice fountain. Bern Welcome identifies the blindfolded figure with sword and scales, standing above earthly rulers. Looking at those attributes gives you something concrete to notice beyond the colour of the statue or the line of flags behind it.

Treat each fountain as a short pause in the street, not an obstacle around which everyone else must move. You can make a satisfying walk from a few carefully observed details. There is no need to hunt down every fountain, especially in cold rain or when one traveller would rather browse a shop under the arcades.

03

Keep the Einstein House optional and date-specific

At Einstein House, the connection is to Einstein’s former apartment. It is a separate paid visit, not an interior included simply by joining an old-town walking tour. Decide whether the subject interests you before adding another timed stop; the public street and the Minster route remain worthwhile without entry.

The operator calendar checked on 16 October 2026 lists the 2026 season ending on 18 December, closure from 19 December and the 2027 season beginning on 1 February. Packtricia will recheck these dates, and readers should confirm the venue before travelling. During the winter closure, continue to the cathedral and terrace rather than planning a visit to a locked door.

04

Turn towards the Minster instead of retracing every step

Use a connecting old-town lane to reach Münsterplatz. The cathedral’s portal gives you a different kind of carved storytelling from the fountain figures. An available interior visit can be a quiet change of pace, but worship and the operator’s visiting schedule take priority over a sightseeing plan.

The Minster Terrace is the natural finish. From here you can see how sharply the old town sits above the Matte quarter and the Aare. It is a good place to sit and orient yourself, and offers a useful alternative to paying for a tower simply to get a view. The tower itself is a distinct stair climb.

05

A lower-neighbourhood extension with a reason to stay

If your legs and the weather suit a descent, continue towards Matte using the actual open stair or lift connection. The Mattelift links the terrace with Badgasse, but its operating arrangements and ticket coverage need checking; do not infer that an open terrace means a lift is running at every hour. Staying on the high-town route is a sensible shorter option.

For a meal, Fischerstübli at Gerberngasse 41 is a specific stop rather than a generic instruction to find a restaurant. The local Bärner Meitschi guide recommends its tartare, and the restaurant confirms seasonal meat, fish and vegetable choices. Book a service that fits: selected weekday lunches differ from its normal evening opening, and its published Christmas closure runs from 22 to 30 December 2026.
