Malmö’s old centre and Saluhall: squares first, lunch second

Pair Malmö’s historic squares with a lunch at Saluhall rather than trying to fit the whole city into one morning. This route works well around a train arrival and leaves the exposed coast for another outing.

01

Start with the town hall

Walk from Malmö Central towards Stortorget for the town hall façade and the old centre. The square is a useful orientation point, not a promise that the town hall interior is open to casual visitors. Look at the building from outside before moving to the smaller streets around it.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

For a booked alternative, compare the Malmö city-highlights walk. The old-centre route does not guarantee Saluhall lunch, Västra Hamnen or Turning Torso entry. Confirm seasonal endpoint and mobility needs rather than relying on contradictory accessibility labels.

02

Continue to Lilla Torg

Move to Lilla Torg for the older façades and a different scale of square. Keep this part unhurried, with time for side streets rather than booking a second tour immediately after arrival. In rain, shorten the outdoor loop and put the food hall earlier in the plan.

03

Use a specific market lunch

We recommend Söderholmens Fisk at Malmö Saluhall for fish and chips, a standing item in the hall’s current trader description. It is a practical hot lunch after the square walk. Other companions can choose a different counter, so you do not need everyone to want the same meal.

04

Leave space for a bakery stop

St Jakobs Stenugnsbageri is another current Saluhall trader, with sandwiches, cardamom buns and sourdough bread. A bun to share or take away fits better than an additional full lunch. Individual traders have different service windows; check the hall’s current listings rather than relying only on the building’s opening hours.

05

Keep a museum alternative honest

Malmöhus and its museums are worthwhile if you want to extend the day. At review on 8 October 2026, lift works had closed the art museum’s third-floor galleries and collection spaces, with activity moved to Kungsparken. We will check for reopening; always check the museum before going. Use its available programme rather than making the closed rooms essential to the route.
