Pedestrians on Madrid's Gran Vía after rain

Your first Madrid weekend: museums, streets and breathing room

Give Madrid's old centre one day and its art and green spaces another. This suggested weekend takes you from Sol and Plaza Mayor to a museum of your choice and Retiro, with room for neighbourhood meals and a shorter plan in heat or rain.

01

Day one morning: Sol, Plaza Mayor and the palace area

Begin at Puerta del Sol, walk to Plaza Mayor, then continue towards the Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral. The walk gives you the older centre without several admissions. If palace rooms interest you, book an interior visit and drop another stop; looking at the building from outside and touring it are different plans.

To turn the palace into the main morning visit, consider a Royal Palace guided tour with entry included. Allow roughly two hours and follow the operator's meeting-point instructions instead of going straight to the palace entrance. Security checks still apply.

02

Day one afternoon: La Latina or Las Letras

Choose La Latina for a meal and a wander through the streets around the old centre, or Las Letras for literary streets and cafés. Keep this as neighbourhood time rather than a list of restaurants to tick off. Gran Vía can be your evening stroll if shops and lively streets appeal, but you do not need to cross town just to add it.

03

Day two morning: one art museum

Choose the Prado for Velázquez and other European painting, Reina Sofía for modern art, or Thyssen-Bornemisza for a broader sweep through painting styles. At the Prado, Las Meninas is a useful starting point for a focused visit. Book your chosen museum and give it the morning instead of trying to see all three.

For an independent gallery visit, you can compare Prado Museum entry tickets on GetYourGuide with the museum booking page. This is admission rather than a live guided tour, so keep your shortlist of paintings handy.

04

Day two afternoon: Retiro with a clear stopping point

After the Prado, head into Retiro for a walk towards the large boating lake and the Monument to Alfonso XII. Pause by the water, then decide whether to continue through the gardens. Check park notices before going, particularly in severe weather; do not depend on a particular building being open.

05

Use a smaller plan in summer or rain

In heat, move the Sol-to-palace walk to the cooler part of the day and spend the hottest hours inside your chosen museum or over lunch. In rain, shorten Retiro and spend more time in Las Letras cafés or another booked indoor visit. A second museum is an option for art lovers, not an obligation.

06

Leave departure morning for one nearby stop

If you have spare time, choose breakfast around Plaza Mayor or a short Las Letras walk near your accommodation. Do not add the Royal Palace and Prado together before a train. Put your departure station into the route planner first and work backwards from the connection you need.
