Keep city shoes as your main pair
Wear the footwear you need for pavements and sightseeing. If you intend to swim, add lightweight beach footwear rather than wearing an uncomfortable beach-only pair across the city. Skip the extra pair when the plan is just a waterfront walk.
A manageable suggested route is the Gothic Quarter in the morning, El Born for lunch, then Port Vell and the Barceloneta promenade. Choose a cathedral-area walk or a Picasso Museum visit as the city activity, not both if you want a relaxed beach afternoon.
Pack a contained change of clothes
For a real swim, bring a dry change and something to keep damp items separate. Think about the journey afterwards: sitting through transport or dinner in wet clothing can be less comfortable than the swim itself.
Keep sun protection within reach
Put your hat, sunglasses and sun protection where you can use them during the city part of the day too. Open waterfront areas can feel different from shaded streets, so plan breaks as well as what goes in the bag.
Read the conditions at the beach
Follow displayed flags, lifeguard instructions and current local notices when deciding whether to enter the water. A planned beach stop does not require a swim if conditions are unsuitable; a meal or coastal walk can still make the detour worthwhile.
Barceloneta works for a sea-view walk even when you do not swim. If the beach notices or weather discourage swimming, stay on the promenade and have a meal instead; the city-and-coast plan still makes sense without entering the water.
Arrange how valuables will stay attended
Take only the valuables you need and decide how the group will look after them. Do not leave a phone, wallet and passport unattended while everyone swims. A deliberately small load makes this part of the outing simpler.
Add one layer for the return
Before leaving your room, check when you expect to return and whether the evening looks cooler or breezy. A light overshirt or jacket can serve both the waterfront and the trip back without taking much space.
If you want more green space and less beach time, finish in Parc de la Ciutadella near El Born. Keep Park Güell for another outing: its hillside approach makes it an awkward addition to a small city-and-beach day.
