Baguio downtown walk: Session Road, the cathedral and a café

Link Session Road with Baguio Cathedral and a useful café stop, choosing a short route that accounts for steep streets, stairs and mountain showers.

01

Start with the slope, not a long checklist

Use Session Road as the route’s spine. Start near its lower end by Malcolm Square and decide how much of the uphill street you want to cover before climbing. Keep the outing compact: the commercial street, cathedral area and one seated stop offer enough variety without crossing the whole city.

Browse from the pavement and cross at a clear crossing rather than stepping into traffic for a photograph. Buildings and businesses change along the hill, so choose the shops that interest you rather than making every doorway a stop. Save your intended landmarks while online; an offline map download does not give walking directions.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Turn towards the cathedral when the climb suits you

Make Baguio Cathedral, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Atonement, the optional high point. Look for the rose-coloured walls, the circular window and the pointed towers, then step back on permitted ground to see how the façade sits above the central streets. The photograph illustrates one tower rather than promising a particular viewpoint.

The approach involves a hill and may involve stairs depending on your route. If steps are difficult, ask about a suitable vehicle drop-off before setting out; do not assume a map’s shortest path is accessible. A shorter Session Road outing with a taxi return is a reasonable finish.

03

Treat the church as a place of worship

Check notices at the entrance and wait if a service or private event limits sightseeing. Wear a shoulder-covering top and respectful clothing, silence your phone and follow any photography restrictions. An open door does not mean that every area is available to visitors.

Look at the architecture from the public approach if entering would interrupt worship. Do not plan a tower climb or special access without the parish confirming it. Keep your sightseeing flexible enough to return another time, and avoid stopping on stairs where people need to pass.

04

Choose one art or food stop

We recommend Oh My Gulay for a vegetable-focused meal in an art-filled setting near the route. The fifth-floor location in La Azotea Building is reached by stairs, with no lift: consider the climb before choosing it. Ask staff about current dishes and ingredients rather than assuming every vegetarian dish is vegan.

For a different short detour, Ili-Likha on Assumption Road brings food stalls and creative structures together. Check which stalls are serving when you arrive and choose one that suits your appetite. It is a small stop to explore at your own pace, not a reason to turn lunch into another timed attraction.

05

Use the lower-town café option if you want less climbing

Finish towards Café by the Ruins on Shuntug Road if you prefer a seated coffee and bread stop near City Hall and Burnham Park. It makes particular sense when you want to return to the lower central area after the hill. Check the actual entrance and seating arrangement if stairs are a concern.

Keep the meal practical: coffee and bread work for a lighter pause, while the current kitchen menu can make it lunch. Do not rely on an old online price or assume every table has the same view. After eating, decide whether a short permitted park walk still feels enjoyable.

06

Shorten the route for rain or tired legs

Wear shoes that grip wet pavement and carry a removable warm layer. An umbrella is useful for showers, but leave your hands free on stairs where possible. Protect your phone and keep the day bag light enough for the climb.

During heavy rain, stop the outdoor route and arrange a ride from an identifiable vehicle-accessible point. Give the driver the exact business or accommodation pin rather than asking for a vague city-centre drop-off. A meal stop is a pause for ordinary showers, not a shelter plan for severe weather.
