Colourful riverside warehouses beside the Nidelva in Trondheim
Trondheim · Weekend plan

A first weekend in Trondheim

Use Saturday for the cathedral, bridge and Bakklandet, then give Sunday a music theme at Rockheim or Ringve. The plan leaves room for food and travel, with a simple one-day version and seasonal royal-residence limits.

01

Saturday morning: one substantial cathedral visit

Begin with Nidaros Cathedral and choose the palace museums or royal regalia only if you want the additional history. Book the relevant admission and give the interior time. The tower is summer-only; an unavailable climb should not derail the church visit.

For a booked alternative, compare the Trondheim panoramic tour. This is a bus overview with exterior photo stops, replacing part of the city outing. It is not the Bakklandet café walk and does not establish Nidaros or other venue admission.

02

Saturday lunch: cross to Bakklandet

Walk over Gamle Bybro and look at the wooden streets before a fish-soup lunch at Baklandet Skydsstation. Check the menu and service, then use Nedre and Øvre Bakklandet for a relaxed afternoon. Add Solsiden only if you want more walking.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

03

Sunday morning: Rockheim or Ringve

Choose Rockheim for popular music and interactive exhibits near the harbour. Choose Ringve instead for instruments, a botanical-garden walk and a separate bus outing; Café Victoria offers a convenient break on the estate. Check Sunday museum and café service, and keep the two museums as alternatives for a short stay.

04

Sunday afternoon: leave time for the journey

After Rockheim, keep Brattørkaia and Solsiden as the short outdoor finish. After Ringve, return by bus without adding a second large museum. Stiftsgården’s interior was seasonally closed at our 9 October 2026 review; Packtricia will recheck 2027 access, but always check before travelling. The Munkegata exterior remains a useful city-centre alternative.

05

One day or persistent rain

With one day, choose the cathedral, bridge and Bakklandet. In persistent rain, shorten the lanes and give the cathedral museums more time; a music-focused visitor can choose Rockheim instead. Wear grippy shoes for old paving and carry a layer for the exposed river between indoor stops.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.

The red portals of Trondheim’s Old Town Bridge

Bakklandet, the Old Town Bridge and a fish-soup stop

Start with Trondheim’s red bridge portals, then wander the wooden streets of Bakklandet with a useful lunch stop in mind. This is a compact neighbourhood outing, with an optional harbour extension rather than a compulsory climb.

Nidaros Cathedral’s stone walls and spires in Trondheim

Nidaros Cathedral and the royal regalia

Give the cathedral and the Archbishop’s Palace area a proper visit rather than squeezing them between photographs. The church interior, royal regalia and tower have different access arrangements; this plan helps you decide what to include.

Trondheim’s warehouses along the Nidelva river

Rockheim, Solsiden and Trondheim’s harbour

Make Norwegian music the main event at Rockheim, with Solsiden and a short waterfront walk around it. Starting beside the Nidelva warehouses keeps the route connected to the old centre while leaving time for the interactive exhibits.

Nidaros Cathedral’s green spires above autumn trees

Torvet, Stiftsgården and the cathedral exterior

Follow Munkegata from Trondheim’s royal residence to Torvet and the cathedral. This is an exterior history walk with a seasonal palace option, distinct from spending the day inside Nidaros Cathedral and its neighbouring museums.

Bergen’s Bryggen waterfront beneath Fløyen

A first weekend in Bergen

Give Bryggen’s trading history one day and keep the second flexible between Fløyen and art. Bergen’s rain and hill cloud are reasons to change the order, while the Fish Market provides a named meal stop.

MUNCH’s distinctive tower beside Oslo’s waterfront

A first weekend in Oslo

Use the first day for Bjørvika and art, then choose Bygdøy or Frogner Park for the second. A separate Akerselva-and-Mathallen pause adds a different part of Oslo without pretending every attraction belongs on one walk.
