Entrance to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan
Milan · Weekend plan

A first weekend in Milan

Choose one main booking each day, then connect Milan’s streets, food stops and canals around it. A confirmed Last Supper slot can replace part of this plan rather than becoming an extra rushed stop.

01

Saturday morning: Duomo with the right ticket

Visit the cathedral and terraces according to the option that suits your mobility and interests. A lift still leaves upper stairs, and security remains. Keep the museum for a day when it opens; the combined ticket is an independent visit rather than a guided tour.

For a self-guided visit, consider the Duomo cathedral and terraces admission ticket. This is admission, not a live guided tour. Lift, fast-track and audio guide depend on the selected option; stairs remain above the lift. The museum and St Gottardo close Wednesdays. Security checks remain, and the ticket is non-refundable.

02

Saturday afternoon: Galleria and a food pause

Explore the Galleria, then consider a panzerotto at Luini on nearby Santa Radegonda. Confirm current service and leave room for a proper meal according to appetite. Follow with one central street walk rather than adding another compulsory museum.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

03

Sunday morning: one art collection

Choose castle museums or a booked Brera visit, leaving the other for a future trip. If your confirmed Last Supper reservation falls today, replace this morning with the refectory and church setting. Check dated visitor notices as well as regular hours before travelling to the collection.

04

Sunday afternoon: park or canals

After the castle, the public park route gives a slower finish. Alternatively, use city transport towards the Darsena and walk one bank of Naviglio Grande. Keep dinner unhurried and check the return route; a canal cruise would be a separate reservation and time commitment.

05

For one day, keep two neighbourhoods

Choose Duomo and the Galleria, then the castle setting or canals. Brera’s Monday closure and the cathedral museum’s Wednesday closure matter for longer stays; at our 9 October 2026 review these remained separate limits. Packtricia will recheck the calendars, and you should confirm availability before going.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.

Milan Duomo: roof, lift, stairs and museum choices

Decide which part of the Duomo you want to visit before choosing a ticket. Roof access, cathedral admission and a museum visit offer different experiences, and the lift does not remove every stair.

Sforza Castle tower beyond its approach square in Milan

Milan: Sforza Castle, Brera and one art collection

Pair the castle’s public setting with one collection, then explore Brera’s streets. Choosing a clear art interest leaves more time to look than trying to do every museum on the same walk.

Naviglio Grande canal and waterside buildings in Milan

Milan’s canals: Darsena and a shorter Naviglio Grande walk

Use the Darsena basin as an orientation point, then choose one canal bank to explore. A slow evening walk works without a boat booking or a promise of a particular aperitivo deal.

Santa Maria delle Grazie church and dome in Milan

The Last Supper in Milan: book first, then plan the walk

Let a confirmed Last Supper reservation shape this outing. Santa Maria delle Grazie gives the painting its setting, but a church visit and entry to the refectory are different things.

A first weekend in Bologna

Keep the first day around the civic squares and food shops, then choose San Luca or a slower museum day. The closed Asinelli climb should not determine whether the weekend feels complete.
