A Fort and Kala Ghoda walk: Gothic facades, galleries and cafés

Follow South Mumbai’s compact heritage quarter from CSMT through Horniman Circle and Kala Ghoda, finishing near the sea.

01

Start outside CSMT

Begin at the public forecourt of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, where the stonework, clock tower and daily commuter flow make the station’s scale easy to read. It remains a working rail hub, so keep clear of station entrances and use the public streets for viewing.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Trace the old Fort streets

Walk south toward Flora Fountain, then turn through the surrounding Fort blocks for carved entrances and arcades. Continue to Horniman Circle and view the Asiatic Society steps across the gardens; check ahead if you hope to enter a library or gallery, since public access differs by institution.

03

Take the Kala Ghoda gallery loop

Head south-west to Kala Ghoda, using the CSMVS museum and Jehangir Art Gallery as indoor anchors between the street-facing galleries. CSMVS lists daily hours but notes that some galleries close during work; use its current visitor page before assigning a long museum stop.

04

Choose a meal that fits the walk

We recommend Burma Burma for a vegetarian Burmese meal in Kala Ghoda; a 2026 Fort and Colaba restaurant guide highlights its tea-leaf salad and mohinga, making it a distinctive seated break within the route. Check the live menu and reserve if you are visiting at a busy time.

05

Finish at Oval Maidan

Walk west to Oval Maidan for the open view across the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco streetscape, then continue to Churchgate or Marine Drive if you still have energy. This is an exposed urban walk with crossings and uneven pavements; shorten it at Flora Fountain in hot weather or add the museum as a cooler alternative.
