The dome of Gázi Kászim Pasha’s former mosque above Széchenyi Square in Pécs at night
Pécs · First visit

A first Pécs weekend: old town, burial chambers and Zsolnay

Keep the first day in the old town and use the second for ceramics in the former factory quarter. Choose one paid heritage visit at a time and leave room for a café pause.

01

Day one morning: Széchenyi Square to Király Street

Begin below the domed former mosque on Széchenyi Square, now a Catholic church. Look at the relationship between the central dome and surrounding civic buildings before choosing an interior between services. Continue east along Király Street for the National Theatre’s façade and the Palatinus Hotel’s ornament. This is an exterior walk: a theatre performance needs its own ticket and a hotel entrance does not establish public access to its rooms.

02

Day one afternoon: one heritage interior

Turn the Cathedral district into a focused afternoon. The four-towered Cathedral offers religious art; Cella Septichora focuses on the city’s early Christian burial chambers. Choose one first rather than rushing through both, and keep a second for another available session. The two institutions have separate admission systems. For a quieter pause, consider Magtár Café in the bishopric visitor centre; its setting keeps the break near the Cathedral rather than sending you across town for an unspecified meal.

03

Day two morning: the Zsolnay factory quarter

Go to the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter east of the central heritage district. Follow the operator’s map to the decorated factory courtyards and Cifra chimney, then choose the Gyugyi Collection for art ceramics or the family-and-factory history exhibition for the industrial story. Admission to the grounds is different from a museum ticket; the wider heritage pass is useful only if its included exhibitions match your actual plans.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

04

Day two afternoon: finish at a comfortable pace

Leave space for a second exhibition or a rest in the quarter’s outdoor grounds when weather permits. If you prefer a view and the sky is clear, make Misina’s TV Tower a separate outing with a confirmed bus or other transfer; it is not a neighbouring stop. Check the tower’s service and restaurant arrangements before relying on them. On a wet day, stay with an available exhibition instead of adding a hill trip merely to fill the afternoon.

05

Adjust the weekend to winter calendars

Reviewed 13 October 2026: Zsolnay’s main permanent attractions switch to Thursday-to-Sunday opening from 2 November, while its family-and-factory history exhibition has a different schedule. The World Heritage operator lists Cella Septichora and the Mausoleum closed on 1 November, and Apáca Street 14 is unavailable with no published reopening. Use available town streets or another confirmed interior as the alternative. Packtricia will recheck these conditions; always check the venues before travelling.

06

Pack for streets as well as interiors

Use tested walking shoes for paving and steps, a removable layer for slower square stops and modest clothes for churches. Summer courtyards need sun protection and water; winter waits need insulation. Keep your day bag small and ask about access to any underground route or tower before purchasing. Tukebusz and MÁV’s current journey information help plan transfers without depending on an invented travel time.
