Déri Museum or MODEM: choose your Debrecen art afternoon

Choose Déri for Munkácsy and its broader collections, or MODEM for changing modern and contemporary art. The neighbouring buildings make a flexible afternoon, but their tickets and visitor rules are separate.

01

Choose Déri for the paintings and collections

Go to Déri tér 1 if Munkácsy’s Christ Trilogy is your main reason to visit. The museum also houses material collected by Frigyes Déri, including weapons and objects from several cultures. Give the paintings time before exploring another collection; choosing a focus is more useful than trying to read every label in both museums.

02

Choose MODEM for the current exhibition programme

Continue towards Baltazár Dezső tér for MODEM, whose visitor entrance address is Hunyadi János utca 1–3. Read the current exhibition descriptions first: changing displays make the choice depend on your interests and dates. A combined MODEM ticket covers its listed exhibitions; it does not combine admission with Déri Museum. A single-exhibition option may fit a shorter visit better.

03

Prepare for MODEM’s cloakroom rules

Leave umbrellas and larger bags in the free mandatory cloakroom as directed. Food and bottles cannot go into its exhibition rooms, so drink water before entry and keep a small valuables bag if you need one. Ask staff about access requirements before committing to an upper-floor display. A café break and an exhibition ticket are different arrangements.

04

Use the calendars to avoid a wasted walk

Reviewed 13 October 2026: MODEM closes Mondays and has a later Wednesday session. Déri’s regular calendar also excludes Mondays; its published holiday list closes 1 November and 24–26 December 2026, with a shorter 31 December session. These are museum-specific rules, not hours for every related exhibition at another address. Packtricia will recheck the calendars; always check both venues before travelling.

05

Build a one-museum or two-museum afternoon

For one museum, pair it with the Great Church exterior and a Piac Street meal. If the weather stays wet and you want both, take a break between them and check the second venue’s last entry before buying. For a Monday, use an available church visit or a dry-weather façade walk instead of assuming an indoor art alternative will open.

06

Add food without leaving the centre

For a Tuesday-to-Saturday meal, consider IKON on Piac Street. Its seasonal Hungarian approach offers a reason to stop beyond proximity; reserve and check the actual menu and budget. Keep eating outside the galleries, and leave enough time that a restaurant booking does not force you to hurry through the painting you came to see.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

Debrecen Great Church: an interior visit or the upper route?

Decide whether the church interior is enough or you want the upper route as well. The A and B labels describe different admission scopes; a guided explanation is a separate service.

A first Debrecen weekend: downtown art and Great Forest paths

Spend the first day around the Great Church and downtown museums, then use the second for the Great Forest and university exterior. This plan leaves room for a proper meal and a shorter rainy-day version.

Debrecen Great Forest: university façade, pond and optional lookout

Give the Great Forest its own outing. Use the university exterior and Lake Békás as clear anchors, with an optional water-tower stop when its visitor facilities are available.

Piac Street: merchant façades, Hal köz and Kossuth Square

Make the short downtown walk about the details above shopfront level: old bank buildings, copper spires and the square’s monuments. Add a seated Hungarian meal or a church visit without turning every doorway into a compulsory stop.

A rainy Szeged afternoon: REÖK, pastries or Belvárosi Mozi

Choose an exhibition or film that actually suits you, then add a pastry break nearby in the centre. A cinema outing needs a language check as well as a seat.

Before visiting Széchenyi: bath kit, age rules and pool maintenance

A bath session works best when you know what your ticket covers and what to bring. Check age eligibility, the pool-service notice and changing arrangements before making it the centre of a Budapest afternoon.
