The glass-roofed corridor and galleries inside Arktikum in Rovaniemi
Rovaniemi · Museum and outdoor pause

Arktikum, the Arctic Garden and a cultural day

Give Arktikum the main part of a Rovaniemi day, with the Arctic Garden as a short outdoor pause and a deliberate lunch plan. This route explains how to combine science and regional history without relying on the now-closed Pilke science centre.

01

Start beneath the glass roof

Go to Arktikum and look along the glass-roofed corridor shown in our photograph. The building houses the Arctic Centre and Regional Museum of Lapland, with exhibitions on both sides of the central tube. Allow time to choose the displays that interest you rather than treating the corridor photo as the whole visit.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Choose a northern question to explore

Use the Arctic Centre displays for science and life in northern regions, and the regional museum for Lapland’s history and culture. Compare the people, environments and changing conditions represented in the current exhibitions. Check the exhibition list before visiting: an old travel article’s temporary show may no longer be on display.

03

Keep the garden close and flexible

Add the Arctic Garden outside Arktikum for a short riverside break when paths and weather permit. It is a useful change of pace after the galleries, not a reason to rush through the museum. Stay on public paths and the bank; snow on a river does not make its ice a visitor route. Shorten the walk in cold wind or poor footing.

04

Plan food for the actual day

On a weekday, Arktikum Café’s lunch buffet keeps the meal in the building; check the current menu and service. At our 9 October 2026 review, the café was closed at weekends during its advertised September-to-November schedule, although museum visiting continued. For a Saturday coffee or breakfast in the centre, we recommend Café Koti for handmade baked goods. Its weekday buffet and shorter Sunday service are separate arrangements.

05

Include Pilke’s story without a closed stop

The neighbouring Science Centre Pilke closed permanently on 2 October 2026, confirmed at our 9 October review. It remains relevant to the area’s forest-science story, but do not buy a trip around entering it or an old three-venue Culture Pass. Packtricia will check for any future visitor provision; always check the venue before travelling. Korundi’s art exhibitions are an available cultural alternative, with their own opening and tickets.

Koskikatu pedestrian street in Rovaniemi, with Santa’s Hotel Santa Claus and Rinteenkulma signs

A first weekend in Rovaniemi

Give central Rovaniemi one day and Santa Claus Village another. This leaves room for Arctic culture, the riverside and a deliberate family outing without treating every snow activity as an essential booking.

Rovaniemi meals: town cafés or a village salmon hut?

Choose a meal that fits where your day already takes you. A central breakfast, a cultural-building café and a village salmon hut solve different needs; none requires turning lunch into another cross-city excursion.

Snow-covered central Rovaniemi riverbank beside a building, with the Ounaskoski bridge in the distance

Rovaniemi’s riverbank, bridge and church walk

Follow the city-side Kemijoki riverbank for a bridge view, then choose a church visit or a café stop. Keep the walk on public land and pavement; snow on the river is not an invitation to step onto the ice.

Santa Claus Office buildings at snowy Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi

Santa Claus Village without overbooking

Make Santa Claus Village a separate outing from central Rovaniemi: meet Santa, find the Arctic Circle marker and choose one extra activity rather than booking every winter experience. The village opens year-round, while individual businesses and snow-dependent attractions follow different calendars.

Helsinki Cathedral’s white façade and green domes beneath a partly cloudy sky

A first weekend in Helsinki

Give central Helsinki one day and Suomenlinna a separate island morning, keeping art and sauna as deliberate choices. This leaves time for a named market-hall lunch and changes of weather beside the Baltic.

The patterned brick gable of Porvoo Cathedral

A first weekend in Porvoo

Use Saturday for Old Porvoo, a specific café and one museum, then visit Runeberg’s home on Sunday. This plan leaves time to enjoy the lanes and river rather than treating the town as a series of rushed interiors.
