Pula · Weekend plan

A first weekend in Pula: Roman monuments, tunnels and olive oil

Keep Saturday centred on the Arena and Roman streets, then give Sunday one museum or tasting choice. This plan leaves space for the city’s layers without promising entry to its closed main archaeology museum.

01

Saturday morning: Arena with time to look

Visit the Arena early enough to enjoy the interior before the hottest part of a summer day. Include the underground olive-and-wine exhibition if its access suits you. Admission does not mean a guide is included, and event arrangements can alter ordinary sightseeing. Keep the afternoon free of another timed booking until you know how long this visit takes.

02

Saturday afternoon: Roman streets and Forum

Follow the pedestrian centre to the Arch of the Sergii and then the Forum. Choose the Temple of Augustus interior if open, or spend more time looking at the square and exterior architecture. A morning market browse fits before the Arena if food shopping matters more to you than an early monument start; do not expect a full market day late in the afternoon.

03

Sunday: choose tunnels or a tasting

For military and city history, visit Zerostrasse and confirm the fortress connection. For food, choose House of Istrian Olive Oil and a specific Green, Gold or Platinum package. Both can fit only if you check actual opening and session times; neither is included in Arena admission. A shorter day with one main visit is often easier to enjoy.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

04

Keep the archaeology museum in the plan as a future visit

Save the main Archaeological Museum for a future visit: it was closed on 9 October 2026, with late 2026 or early 2027 the planned reopening window. Packtricia will check for reopening, and readers should check before going. Choose the available Arena or temple collections for this weekend.

05

Give the coast a separate outing

If the city-centre visits are enough, keep a coastal outing towards Verudela optional and check public transport before leaving. It is not the next stop after the Forum on this walking route. In rain, favour an available indoor exhibition or booked tasting; in heat, carry water and use shade rather than adding another exposed monument circuit.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.

Stone arches inside Pula Arena

From Pula Arena to Zerostrasse and Kaštel

Use the Arena as your orientation point, then explore the tunnel network and the hilltop fortress. The tunnel entrance and last admission matter more than trying to squeeze the visit into a late-afternoon gap.

The interior of Pula Arena and its surviving stone arches

Pula Arena: the arches, arena floor and underground exhibition

Give the amphitheatre more than a quick photograph from the pavement. Its open interior and separate underground display make a useful first visit before the rest of Pula’s Roman centre.

Historic buildings and café terraces around Pula’s Forum

Pula’s market and an Istrian olive-oil tasting

Browse the working market, then choose a tasting that teaches you something useful about Istrian oil. The museum packages differ, so a short visit and a longer food-and-wine experience should not be described as the same outing.

The columned front of the Temple of Augustus in Pula

Roman Pula on foot: the Sergii Arch, Forum and Temple of Augustus

Join the Roman monuments with a route through the pedestrian centre. The Temple of Augustus adds a small indoor collection if open, while the larger archaeology museum remains a future return visit.

Aerial view of Dubrovnik’s Old Town within its fortified walls

A first weekend in Dubrovnik: walls, palace and a flexible second day

Give the Old Town one full day, then choose Lokrum or Srđ for the second. This leaves room for meals, museum time and weather without making every expensive ticket compulsory.

Palm-lined Riva waterfront in Split

A first weekend in Split: palace streets, markets and a flexible second day

Keep Saturday centred on the palace and food district. On Sunday choose a short Marjan outing or Klis, leaving room for a proper meal and the journey back.
